BLOOMINGTON – It’s finally official. Archie Miller’s staff of assistants and support personnel for his first season as the IU men's basketball coach has been set.
Even though most of the staff had been revealed through social media leaks over the last few weeks, Indiana made it official Thursday when it announced in a press release that Miller had hired Tom Ostrom, Bruiser Flint and Ed Schilling as his three full-time assistants, and Bill Comar as assistant athletic director for basketball administration. In addition, Ben Sander has been added to the staff as a graduate assistant, and former IU basketball standout Derek Elston will return for his third season as director of player development.
“I’m very excited to be able to put together what I think will be one of the hardest-working and gifted staffs in the country that will recruit, teach, mentor and develop the next generation of Indiana Hoosiers,” Miller said in a press release put out by the university. “This group brings a wealth of experience in every facet of coaching and I can’t wait to work with them on a daily basis.’’
Ostrom comes to IU after working on Miller’s staff at Dayton. Flint spent the last 15 seasons as the head coach at Drexel, and Schilling was most recently on Steve Alford’s staff at UCLA and has Division I head coaching experience at Wright State. Schilling also was Yogi Ferrell’s high school coach at Park Tudor in Indianapolis.
“I think the first step in establishing excellence is to surround yourself with people who have the ability to make everyone they work with better,” Miller said. “We have a group that offers our young men in the program expertise that is second to none and should help them have the best experience possible as a student-athlete.”
Ostrom spent the last six seasons with Miller at Dayton. Prior to that he was an assistant coach at Arkansas (2007-11), South Alabama (2004-07) and Florida (2002-04).
Flint spent the last 15 seasons as the head coach at Drexel and the five years prior to that as the head coach at Massachusetts. He was the Colonial Athletic Association coach of the year four times.
Schilling, a native of Lebanon, Ind., spent the last four seasons as an assistant at UCLA. Prior to UCLA, he was at Park Tudor for four years, guiding the Panthers to an 87-18 record, including two IHSAA Class 2A state titles and one runner-up finish.
From 2007-13, Schilling served as a head coach for Adidas Nations, coaching and training the Adidas High School All-American Team in national and international competition. In addition, he has served as executive director and trainer at Champions Academy, a not-for-profit basketball organization for youth and college-aged athletes in Indianapolis.
He was also an assistant coach at Memphis for two seasons and the head coach at Wright State for six years. In addition he coached under John Calipari at UMass, and also had stints as a high school head coach in two other Indiana stops – Western Boone and Logansport.
All three coaches are on campus and will begin their duties immediately.
