National Voter Registration Day Sept. 28

Celebrated on the fourth Tuesday of September, National Voter Registration Day will next take place on Sept. 28 when volunteers and organizations from all over the country will “hit the streets” in a single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts. National Voter Registration Day seeks to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.

According to U.S. Census data from 2020, as many as 1 in 4 eligible Americans are not registered to vote. Every year, millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote.

In most of Indiana, voter registration will be open during all of 2021 since there are no regularly scheduled elections in most of the state. If a special election is held in 2021 in a school corporation, for example, or in certain small towns, voter registration will close 29 days before the date of that 2021 election.

You have the right to vote in Indiana if:

You are both a U.S. citizen and a resident of Indiana; and

• You will be at least 18 years of age on or before the next General or Municipal Election, and

• You are not currently in prison after being convicted of a crime; and

• You have lived in the precinct where you vote for at least 30 days prior to the election; and

• You are registered to vote.

You can confirm Your Registration Status or register by visiting www.indianavoters.in.gov or by calling the Cass county Clerk’s office at 574-753-7870.

The League of Women Voters believes voting is a sacred right. For nearly 100 years, we have fought to protect the rights of eligible voters and expand access for those who’ve been left out of our democratic process. We urge you to register to vote and let your voice be heard.
