Local businesses continue to ensure that students won’t go hungry while schools are closed during COVID-19 social-distancing measurements.

Classes are currently out of session due to the coronavirus, which means that many students no longer have access to free or reduced-price meals at school.

Bruno’s Pizza donated 50 large cheese pizzas, 100 homemade pasta dishes and fresh frozen fruit to students 18 and under on Thursday through Felix’s Pantry, the food bank at Logansport Community High School.

“I basically just gave the food and provided the menu,” said Bruno’s Pizza owner Gina Curl. “We’re doing well, and I thought now is a good time to give back. I just wanted to help out the people in the community.”

Curl said that she — along with LHS teachers Amy Werner and Kellie Person and Bruno’s employees — passed out around 120 meals at the pizzeria’s drive-thru, and then the Felix’s Pantry team reached out to families who may need them and delivered the rest.

“It’s just the right thing to do,” said Curl. “If you’re doing good in a time of need, you should give back with your heart. Money is not a motivator to me — people are — so I’d rather pour it back into the community where I can and go from there.”

Gov. Eric Holcomb mandated on Thursday, March 19, that all Indiana schools will remain closed until at least May 1 to help combat the spread of the COVID-19. This mandated closure follows recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines to limit gatherings to less than 10 people and may be extended through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

Felix’s Pantry will distribute additional food bags throughout the school closure period.

The LCSC Food Service team will be distributing five breakfast and five lunch pre-packaged meals on Monday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to noon at Logansport High School’s Door 1 and the Columbia Elementary School bus entrance.

Families are to stay in their vehicles in the meal distribution lines, as food packs will be delivered directly to their vehicles by LCSC staff.

Additional food resources include: Emmaus Mission food pantry, located at the corner of West Richardville and Water streets, one block to the east of their former location; and the Salvation Army, located at 620 Wilkinson St. in Logansport.
