A Peru woman died early Friday after the sport utility vehicle she was driving left the road near Galveston, struck a tree and caught fire.

According to the preliminary investigation by Cass County Sheriff’s Deputy David Wells, 52-year-old Stacie Keith of Peru was driving a 2007 Chevrolet HHR south on CR 1000 East — north of CR 1225 South — when she drove off the east side of the roadway, according to a press release from Cass County Sheriff Ed Schroder.

The accident happened at about 3:09 a.m.

Her vehicle caught fire after it hit the tree, and a passerby tried to rescue her but was unable to, Schroder stated.

The Galveston Fire Department arrived and extinguished the vehicle fire.

Cass County Sgt. Pat Zeider and Deputy David Wells responded to the crash along with Galveston Fire, Galveston Police and Phoenix Ambulance Service.

Cass County Coroner Randy Rozzi started a death investigation at the scene.

Assisting at the crash scene were Cass County Sheriff Ed Schroder, Detective Sergeant Dale Campbell and Galveston Deputy Marshal Daryl Lutz.

The crash is still under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
