Students in the Pioneer Regional School Corporation and the Lewis Cass Schools district will see new faces in the new semester.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office has assigned school resource officers to each district.

Cass County Deputy Ryan Preston is assigned to Lewis Cass.

He has 10 years of experience in policing and is a certified school resource officer through the National Association of School Resource Officers.

Cass County Deputy Brian Swartzell is assigned to Pioneer.

A 21-year veteran of law enforcement, he is also a certified school resource officer through the National Association of School Resource Officers.

They both started Jan. 6.

The officers are the result of a cooperative effort between the districts and Cass County Sheriff Ed Schroder.

They’re funded by both the county and by the districts, which use the Indiana Safe Schools grant to help find the positions.

It’s the first time either district has had a school resource officer.

Schroder stated, “The protection and mentoring of our youth is a primary function of any police agency. The school resource officers will be on the frontline of fostering positive relationships while providing security at our local schools.”
