The city council on Monday agreed to allocate $122,000 for preliminary work on a road project related to the proposed new campus of Ivy Tech Community College.

The money will pay for engineering and plans for the rehabilitation of 18th Street.

The expenditure represents a small portion of the city’s share of the project, for which the General Assembly recently allocated $16 million.

Council President Kerry Worthington said Mayor Mike Fincher deserved a lot of credit for selling the project.

"The city is fortunate to have you doing that," he said.

Fincher said he was not alone in his sales effort.

"The whole community stepped up," he said.
