A Logansport mainstay is closing as November ends.
Susan’s Corner Cupboard, 2200 E. Market St., will close at the end of the day Saturday, Nov. 30, ending about 49 years in the city.
It was originally owned by John Clark and he had two locations (the second was at the corner of West Market and Cicott streets, which is now Modern Real Estate). Then his niece, Susan Hedges, took over the east side location 19 years ago.
“I don’t think people really thought I would do it,” Hedges said.
However, “it’s time to retire. My husband and I have talked about doing things, so it’s time we did them,” she said.
“It’s a lot of work,” she said.
She plans to continue working as an associate broker at MPR Realty.
Hedges did try to find a new owner for the store, but there were no buyers interested. “I don’t own the property — the real estate — so it was a hard sell,” she said.
The business was still doing well despite the number of convenience stores and dollar stores that have come to the city.
She’s also heard from her regular customers since she announced the closing.
“They’re just sad to see us close, and once I explain it to them, they understand. And I’ve had so many well-wishes,” Hedges said.
Hedges said she’ll miss the people who came to Corner Cupboard over the almost two decades she owned it.
“I’ve made so many friends through the years,” she said. “And when this happens, you realize you’ve known them 18-19 years and they’re like family,” she said.
She has followed people through weddings and children and other milestones in their lives.
And she’s sure the significance of her retirement will hit her once it happens, she said.
Right now, she’s grateful, though.
“I just want to thank the community of Logansport for their business this whole 19 years. It’s been a pleasure,” she said.
