One woman died early Monday morning when the vehicle that she was driving crashed into the backend of a semi-truck on U.S. 35 near the intersection of U.S. 24.

At approximately 8:27 a.m., dispatch received calls about a two-vehicle accident at the Anoka Exchange location.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Jamie Pay, 24, Logansport, was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox southbound on U.S. 35 in the left lane of the two-lane highway when she struck a tractor-trailer that also was in the left, southbound lane of U.S. 35. Upon impact, the Equinox spun and came to rest in the right lane of the highway, south of the interchange.

The semi-truck was a 2020 Volvo with a Wabash National trailer, according to the CCSD. The driver was 25-year-old Jaspreet Singh of Sacramento, Calif.

According to the sheriff’s department, witnesses stated that the semi driver was backing up northbound in a southbound lane on U.S. 35 with his hazard lights activated. Singh allegedly was attempting to turn eastbound onto U.S. 24 after initially missing the turn.

Pay was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cass County Coroner’s Office. Her family has been notified.

Singh was uninjured.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police, and Logansport Police Department sent crash reconstruction units to the scene, which closed the stretch of road to traffic for approximately three hours. The crash remains under investigation.

Assisting agencies included the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police, Logansport Police Department, Cass County Fire District 1, Logansport Fire Department, Walton Fire Department, Phoenix Ambulance Service, and the Cass County Coroner’s Office.
