Mayor Chris Martin was all smiles Wednesday morning.
Fresh off of his Facebook announcement, he finally found the perfect time to let everyone else in on a secret – he proposed to his girlfriend and she accepted. The proposal to former deputy mayor, Stacy Cox, has been a while coming.
“It was ‘Plan C,’” he said of his intended question.
When his first plan failed due to the pandemic shutting down cruise lines, he thought ‘Plan B’ would work. But, alas, the movie theaters had shut the doors as well.
So, he patiently waited for the next opportunity – and that’s when he came up with a tried-and-true formula: a restaurant and a ring.
The couple made a trip to Indianapolis where Martin treated Cox to a special dinner at The Cheesecake Factory. When they had finished their dinner, a server brought out a piece of cheesecake with “Will you marry me?” written across in whipped cream.
Recalling the moment, Martin expressed how excited he was and how much joy Cox has brought to his life.
“We’ve been together for a while now,” he said with a grin, remembering the moment she said the best thing that he has ever heard – ‘Yes.”
She accepted, and now the Logansport politician and his former deputy are planning a September 2021 wedding where they will join their families as one. Martin’s 2-year-old son, Cyrus, and Cox’s two children, Ashlyn, 10, and Alayna, 3, will continue to reside in the city, said Martin.
The mayor said his relationship with Cox has been rooted in friendship, which is why everything has worked out so well for them. They began as professionals and developed personal feelings along the way.
It was one of the reasons Cox opted to resign from her post, he said. “It was for the morality.”
Now, as Cox continues to find a new professional setting, she also will be deciding on a venue, music and a dress. By this time next year, Martin will be a married man and he couldn’t be happier.
