Kiwanis golf outing for drug awareness today

The Logansport Noon Kiwanis Club is hosting the third Annual Golf for Drug Awareness, Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Logansport Golf Club. Lunch. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with tee off at 12 p.m.

The event helps fund programs to reach the children of Logansport and Cass County via drug education, to prevent drug use and to help the child victims of drug abuse in families.

For a $10 donation, participants can launch a golf ball up to 400 yards on hole number 14. Ball drop tickets are $10 each for a 1/300 chance for a $500 first prize for closest to the pin, and $250 for second closest. Ball drop will be at 1 p.m., and you need not be present to win. Hole-in-one opportunities too! Other prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive, etc.

County Pickers coming to Legion Sept. 25

The Country Pickers will be coming to the American Legion Post #60, 828 Burlington Ave., Logansport from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25.

Dam Removal Project focus of two meetings

The public will have two opportunities to be heard and provide input concerning the proposed 10th Street Dam Removal Project. The topic will be presented during the next two Logansport Municipal Utilities service board meetings: 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 and 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Both meetings will be held in the LMU Board Room of the third floor of the City Building.

Galveston Cemetery to undergo cleanup

The Galveston Cemetery Association is holding its cemetery cleanup through Sept. 30, weather permitting. Wanted decorations should have been removed by Sept. 15, and new decorations should not be placed until Oct. 1. The association asks that decorations only be placed on the east side of monuments.

Red Cross asks for blood donations

The Red Cross is asking for blood donations. All types are needed to ensure that the right blood is available for all patients.

High school students and donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet height and weight requirements.

Free COVID-19 testing for Hoosiers

The Cass Heath Department offers free COVID-19 testing from 7:45 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Monday, Thursday and Friday and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 1616 Smith St., Logansport.

Testing will be available to all members of the public regardless of symptoms. Children as young as 2 years of age can be tested with parental consent.

Individuals should bring proof of Indiana residency, such as a state-issued ID, work ID or utility bill. Walk-ins will be welcome, but to avoid waiting in line, individuals can register for an appointment by visiting https://scheduling.coronavirus.in.gov/.

This testing is made possible through a grant from the Indiana Department of Health to ensure that community testing is available anywhere there is a need. Through this grant, all the testing supplies and equipment, including test kits, personal protective equipment (PPE), sanitizer and the platform for registration and data management, are provided. The grant continues through June 30, 2021, and is renewable.

The state-run Optum sites will continue to offer testing as well. A complete map of test sites across the state is available at https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/2524.htm.

Ivy Tech starting online enrollment

Ivy Tech Community College will host a Virtual Express Enrollment Week Sept. 21 to 25 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. During the event, prospective students will complete their enrollment steps virtually and sign up for classes that start Oct. 26.

Interested participants must RSVP. During the appointment, participants will receive assistance with assessment, meeting with an advisor, and registering for classes.

Starting in October, Ivy Tech will offer 8-week courses in a wide range of programs including healthcare, IT, manufacturing, and more. There are also short-term certificate options that are entirely online and available for free through the Workforce Ready Grant.

Past due tax bills going out

The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) is starting to send tax bills that were delayed earlier this year due to tax filing and payment extensions related to COVID-19. Bills for individuals who owe taxes, will begin reaching mailboxes this week and continue to be sent through December 2020.

Individuals can pay their bill in full online through DORpay at dor.in.gov using Visa, MasterCard or e-check. Payments can be scheduled for a future date.

Individuals that cannot pay their bill in full and owe $100 or more can set up a payment plan through INtax Pay at in.gov.

Corporate and business customers can pay their bills in full online or set up a payment plan through INTIME at dor.in.gov.

Payments can also be mailed to DOR directly. Customers must include the taxpayer(s) name(s), Social Security number(s) and tax year on the check. Individual income tax bill payments can be mailed to:

LWA unemployment benefits to be paid

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development [DWD] will begin making Lost Wages Assistance

[LWA] payments to eligible claimants beginning the week of Monday, Sept. 21.

LWA is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA] to provide $300 per week to supplement unemployment benefits for those who have an unemployment benefit amount of at least $100 and are out of work due to COVID-19.

LWA funding will only cover the six-week period from the week ending Aug. 1 to the week ending Sept. 5. No LWA funding will be available to states beyond that time period.

Indiana will make payments the week of Sept. 21, covering the period of Aug. 1 to Sept. 5, for those eligible. For those claimants with issues holding payment, DWD will make payments, pending funding availability, once eligibility is established.

Since March 8, DWD has paid a total of $4.9 billion to nearly 670,000 Hoosiers.

Annual Wheatland Avenue UMC rummage sale

The Wheatland Avenue United Methodist Church will host its annual fall rummage sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26. Homemade noodles will be available, but there will not be a bake sale. All items are 10 cents after noon. No early birds please.

Annual airport open house canceled

The Cass County Airport annual open house, sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association club, has been canceled on this year’s planned Sept. 26 date due to COVID-19.

Light Up Logansport seeking volunteers

The Light Up Logansport Parade is seeking volunteers to assist with the planning and organizing of this year’s celebration to be held on Friday, Nov. 27. Volunteers are needed in many different roles such as logistics, safety, entries, float building, music, fundraising etc. No previous experience is necessary, just a willingness to give some time to make another great holiday memory. Farmers reminded to update Price Loss Coverage

The USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) reminds farm owners that they have a one-time opportunity to update Price Loss Coverage (PLC) program yields for covered commodities on the farm. The deadline is September 30, 2020, to update yields, which are used to calculate the PLC payments for 2020 through 2023. Additionally, producers who elected Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) should also consider updating their yields.

“The last time farmers could update yields for these important safety-net programs was in 2014,” said FSA Administrator Richard Fordyce. “It is the farm owner’s choice whether to update or keep existing yields. So, if you rent, you’ll need to communicate with your landlord who will be the one to sign off on the yield updates.”

Updating yields requires the signature of one owner on a farm and not all owners. If a yield update is not made, no action is required to maintain the existing base crop yield on file with FSA.

For program payments, updated yields will apply beginning with the 2020 crop year which, should payments trigger, will be paid out in October of 2021.

Census deadline this month

Sept. 30 is the last day to respond to the 2020 U.S. Census. The census population count determines how many federal representatives Indiana will receive in Congress for the next 10 years, as well as how much federal funding our community will receive for roads, schools, housing and important social programs.

People can complete the questionnaire sent to by mail or can complete it online at my2020census.gov.

Those going online will need to provide the 12 digit Census ID, which should have come in the mail with the paper questionnaire.

Their answers were then entered into the site where they can be seen by the public. This is however, the first time Cass County League of Women Voters has participated.

American Legion to hold Rummage & Bake Sale Oct. 3

The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, 828 Burlington Ave., Logansport will hold a Rummage & Bake Sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. There will be a large variety of items, including lots of home made baked goods. At 2 p.m., many items will be 50% off. This event is open to the public. Proceeds benefit student scholarships.

Overdose Awareness Month forum

The 4th Dimension Recovery House is holding a free presentation for October about overdose awareness from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, at the McHale Complex in Riverside Park, 1208 Riverside Dr. in Logansport.

Those attending can meet substance abuse survivors and hear about their struggles and recovery successes, as well as learn about helpful resources and gain a better understanding about how to help someone with addiction.

Attendees will also learn more about harm reduction, medication-assisted treatment and Narcan/Naloxone.

Road construction roundup

  • Ind. 49 is closed between 400 N and 550 N through late September for a bridge deck overlay project on the bridge over Davisson Ditch.
  • There is a road closure for Ind. 14 between U.S. 421 and 600 E that began Monday, Aug. 17. The road will be closed for a small structure replacement over Mosely Branch Ditch. The project is expected to be completed in late September 2020. Drivers should seek an alternate route. The official detour will follow U.S. 421, Ind. 10 and U.S. 231.
  • There’ll be lane closures on Indiana 39 between Indiana 16 and Indiana 14 in Pulaski County until mid-November. Crews will be resurfacing the road and close lanes for about 10 hours a day, during daylight hours only. Flaggers will direct traffic in the area where work is occurring.
  • High Street is now closed between Third and Fourth Streets for the relocation of utilities in preparation for the Cass County Jail’s expansion. The work is expected to last until fall. Vehicle access to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Jail is from the intersection of Third and High Streets. The general parking entrance is located just east of that intersection on the north side of High Street. The handicapped parking entrance is located just east of that intersection on the south side of High Street. The main entrance to the County Building is still accessible.
  • Lane closures on U.S. 31 between Indiana 25 and W 1500 N began Aug. 31 and should run through early November. U.S. 31 will be reduced to one lane in each direction for patching and resurfacing in this area. Lane closures will alternate so drivers should be prepared for changing traffic patterns.
  • Drivers will notice paving work on three Cass County roads, beginning after Labor Day. Work on the community crossing-funded projects was scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8, with milling on Old Indiana 25 between Cicott Street and the Hoosier Heartland, followed by paving. By the end of the week of Sept. 6, work is expected to start on CR 200N between 300E and 450E, and will then move to CR 600E between Logansport Road and 150N. The public might encounter work being done on more than one road at once. The affected roads will remain open to traffic, but drivers should prepare for flaggers and possible delays. Weather permitting, the work is expected to be substantially complete by the end of the month.
  • The shoulders on U.S. 421 over Hill Ditch (between Francesville and Monon) will be closed starting Tuesday, Sept. 8, to repair and replace joints on the bridge structure. Wide loads are limited to 12 feet in width. The shoulders will be closed for approximately one month while bridge work is completed.
  • Indiana 25 between C.R. 500 S and C.R. 400 S (Fulton to Rochester) will be closed starting Tuesday, Sept. 14 to rehabilitate the bridge over Mud Creek. The road will be closed through early October 2020. Drivers should seek an alternate route. The official detour will follow Indiana 16, U.S. 35 and Indiana 14.
  • Indiana 17 between C.R. W 950 S and C.R. W 900 S will be closed beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8 for a bridge rehabilitation project on the bridge over Grassy Creek. The road is expected to reopen in early-November 2020. Drivers should seek an alternate route. A shorter detour than the previously planned one will follow Indiana 114, Indiana 17 and Indiana 14.
  • Indiana 25 between C.R. E 575 N and C.R. N 500 E will close beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8. The road will be closed through late October, 2020 for a small pipe structure replacement. Drivers should seek an alternate route. The official detour will follow U.S. 31 and Indiana 110.

VFW Auxiliary meetings

The Auxiliary to VFW Post #3790 meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month and generally last one hour.

The start of the 2020-2021 year will mark a year-long celebration of the formation of the “Ladies Auxiliary” in 1920. In 2006, the “Ladies Auxiliary” and the “Men’s Auxiliary” joined forces and are now known as the VFW Auxiliary. Male relatives of veterans may now join The VFW Auxiliary. Membership is $20 a year, and Life Memberships are available. The Auxiliary has lost over 300 members in the past 10 years.

Royal Center library reopened

The Royal Center-Boone Township Public Library is now open. Hours are Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. by scheduled appointment only. The library will only be able to allow three people in at a time and have up to two people on computers at a time.

No children under the age of 16 will be allowed in the building.

Farmers’ Market remains open

The Logansport Farmers’ Market, at the corner of Fourth and Market Streets is now open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October and on Wednesdays from 3-6 p.m. through September.

Vendors will wear masks and comply with any other restrictions that may be in effect at that time. Vendors’ selling areas will be situated at least 8 feet apart for better social distancing.

A variety of locally-produced items will be available for sale, and new vendors are welcome at any time. Those who home-produce vegetables, fruit, eggs, meat, herbs, plants, baked goods or hand-crafted items are welcome.

As a local market, products should be produced in Cass, Howard, Miami, Fulton, White, Pulaski or Carroll counties.

Parks Department issues recommendations

During the Corona Virus COVID-19 pandemic, the Logansport Parks & Recreation Department has made recommendations for responsible behavior that benefits all when using the trails and green spaces in the parks:

• When walking a dog, remember to bring a waste bag to clean up afterwards.

• Do not use parks or trails if you are exhibiting symptoms.

• Follow CDC’s guidance on personal hygiene prior to visiting parks or trails.

• Remember that although the park restrooms are open, its drinking fountains are not open. You should bring your own drinking water and take care of yourself prior to leaving home.

• Share the trail and warn other trail users of your presence as you pass.

• Observe CDC’s minimum recommended social distancing of 6 feet from other persons at all times.

Indiana 211 adding resources

Indiana 211 is adding additional resources for Hoosiers in need of assistance connecting with health and human services agencies in their local communities. Indiana 211 has created a new website to serve as a clearinghouse of information on COVID-19 resources. The organization is also adding 20-30 new navigators to handle increased call volume. Community Navigators help people to contact 211, identify their goals, prioritize their needs, and connect them to valuable community resources. Indiana 211 is a free service that connects Hoosiers with help and answers from thousands of health and human services agencies in their local communities — quickly, easily and confidentially. This includes needs such as food, utility, health care and childcare assistance.

Visitors Bureau accepting grant applications

The Cass County Visitors Bureau (CCVB) will be awarding grants for out-of-county marketing and visitor experience enhancement, to events and attractions within Cass County. Grant requests will be considered and awarded by the Cass County Visitors Bureau Board of Directors. Multiple grants will be awarded from the $10,000 fund so that a variety of organizations can be assisted with their events or attractions. These grants are very competitive, so it is suggested that applications be made as early as possible.

Rules and regulations for funding requests and grant applications will be available in the CCVB office between 8 a.m. and noon Monday through Friday, or electronically by contacting Toni Savini at info@visit-casscounty.com.

Grant applications will be accepted throughout 2020, but must be in the CCVB office by the 20th of the month for consideration at the following month’s regularly scheduled meeting.

Recipients of the 2019 grants were: Carousel in the Park Fun Day, Two Rivers on Two Wheels Bike Tour, the 2 Rivers Music Festival, the Panhandle Pathway Trail, Christmas in the Park, the Taste of Cass County and AIM Softball Fields.

Ivy Tech offering free classes, training

Ivy Tech Community College has announced it is offering free classes and training for 10,000 participants. The college is elevating its commitment to Hoosiers impacted by COVID-19 experiencing unemployment, reduced hours or furloughs across the state. Participants may take more than one class or training in a range of relevant high-demand areas.

Classes and training sessions that are currently being offered as part of the initiative include:

Advanced manufacturing: Industry 4.0 silver level multi-skill maintenance and operations.

Tools of the Industry with Autodesk: Introduction to CAD, CAM, and practical CNC machining, Fusion 360 introduction to CAD and CAM, simulation analysis for mechanical engineers, 3-axis machining with Fusion 360, introduction to mechanical engineering design and manufacturing, and modeling and design for mechanical engineers.

Applications available for Logan’s Landing program

Applications for the Commercial Facade Improvement Funding Program are available to commercial business or property owners within the Logan’s Landing district, according to a release. Applicants have a full-year from the date of approval to complete the project, and the program offers 50 percent matching funding up to $5,000 per property for eligible improvements.

Those improvements include exterior painting, exterior lighting, windows and doors, facade maintenance and restoration, awnings and installation of brick facade.

Peru Community Schools Fine Art Gallery open

The PCS Fine Art Gallery located in Peru High School, 401 N. Broadway, Peru, is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays through Oct. 2. The gallery will be closed for fall break from Oct. 3-11. It will reopen Oct. 12 and the hours will change to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The PCS Fine Art Gallery follows the school calendar and will be closed when school is not is session due to weather and holidays.

Currently on display is a “Women Artists of the Suffrage Era” on loan from the Richmond Art Museum which showcases portraits, landscapes and florals of female artists from the turn of the century to 1930. Also, on display at this time is artwork from its permanent collection and Underwood and Underwood historic stereo views.
