Friday roundup: Lebanon’s Schaller shuts out Logan

Logansport has one of the highest scoring baseball teams in the state this year.

But the Berries, for one game at least, met their match on Friday night at Class 3A No. 3 Lebanon.

Lebanon sophomore right-hander Reid Schaller, already a verbal commit to Vanderbilt of the SEC, fired a one-hit shutout in the Tigers’ 10-0 win in five innings.

Pitching on just two days rest after a complete-game win over Sagamore Conference opponent North Montgomery, 8-4, on Tuesday, Schaller was in a groove the entire way and again kept his pitch count low, needing just over 50 pitches to complete the five-inning game. He utilized a 90 mph fastball and good breaking ball and pumped the strike zone. He struck out five and hit one batter.

Jacob Shelton had the lone base hit for the Berries (13-6) on a hard hit ball through the left side of the infield.

The Berries were playing their fourth game in four days and have another North Central Conference game today, so they did not use one of their top four pitchers in the contest. Carter Jones and Xavier Luna both pitched in just their second games of the season after they combined to beat Maconaquah 7-2 on April 28.

Jones allowed six runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings pitched. Four of the seven hits were infield hits, but the big blow was a three-run home run by Caleb Myers in the first inning, which could have been avoided with better defense earlier in the inning. Colton Ranney added a two-out, two-run single in the second inning.

Luna allowed four runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief, striking out two.

Logan coach Jim Turner said before the game he was hoping to see Schaller as he thinks it will be helpful for his team going forward to see a pitcher of that caliber.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Purdue’s new field but with thunderstorms in the area throughout the day and night Purdue did not want the game to be played on its field, so it was moved to Lebanon.

Logan hosts NCC leader Richmond at 11 a.m. today for one game.

Caston 6, Wabash 0

Caston sophomore Tori Rentschler pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking two for the Class A No. 8 Comets at Wabash.

Cat Dively went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Caston at the plate. Marli Leazenby had a triple and RBI. Madison Taylor went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Tierney Rentschler added a double.
