Ice-cold Comets fall at Carroll

FLORA — Caston’s boys basketball team was defeated 43-27 at Carroll Friday night.

The Comets (2-2) shot just 25 percent from the field in the loss, according to coach J.R. Howell.

“We were just flat out cold,” Howell said. “We got a lot of good looks and didn’t hit. We shot 4 of 23 from 3 which killed us. We shot just three free throws, Quentin [Douglass] went 1 of 3.”

Douglass scored 16 in the contest to lead the Comets. Alex Howdeshell had four, Brayton Jellison added three and Jake Kingery and Graham Rentschler chipped in two apiece.

Brandon Dillon led the Cougars (4-2) with 18 points. Jarin Bush scored 11, Justin Willoughby had seven and Seth Eldridge added five.

The Comets went scoreless in the second quarter and trailed 24-9 at the half. They outscored the Cougars 13-7 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 31-22 but were outscored 12-5 in the fourth.

“I thought defensively and really with the game plan in particular we did exactly what we wanted to do,” Howell said. “We made Bush and Dillon fight for every basket they made and attempted. We did a nice job of doubling them. We outscored them 13-7 in the third quarter and you could tell they started to get a little frustrated. We played the way we wanted to play and did a good job.

“It was just one of those games where I was pretty pleased with the shots we got, they just didn’t fall. That may have to do with our effort defensively. Defensively we did a good job and it got us tired legs. We got open looks and didn’t convert.”

The Comets host Taylor tonight.
