Winamac topples Delphi 56-37 to reach final

WINAMAC — Stephanie Shorter had 22 points and Taylor Brandt scored 12 to lead Winamac’s girls basketball team to a 56-37 win over Delphi Friday at the Class 2A Winamac Sectional.

The Warriors (13-6) face North Judson (8-11) at 7:30 p.m. tonight for the championship. Delphi finishes 11-9.

Bethany Brogdon and Ali Larkin scored eight points apiece for the Winamac crew. Brogdon also dished five assists and set a new school record in the process.

“Bethany Brogdon did a great job of taking control of the game at the point, and in spite of the pressure was able to break the single season assist record that was held by Jordan Brandt at 124,. Bethany finished the game with five and is currently at 126,” Warriors coach Jeff Wagner said.

“The girls followed the game plan to a T tonight and played extremely hard. We were able to handle the pressure from a young and very athletic Delphi team. They play in-your-face defense, and I thought our guards did a great job tonight.”

Winamac led 29-21 at halftime and 44-31 after three quarters.

Bailey Gasser led the Oracles with nine points. Morgan Crowel added six.

“If we can put together a defensive effort tomorrow night like we did tonight, we will be hard to stop,” Wagner said. “Great team effort, it was a lot of fun tonight, we need one more.”

Winamac did not play North Judson during the regular season as the game was cancelled due to inclement winter weather. North Judson defeated North Newton 54-26 on Friday to advance.
