Logan tops Western, advances to holiday tourney final

MONTICELLO — In a battle of No. 6-ranked teams, Class 4A Logansport defeated Class 3A Western 60-47 Saturday in a semifinal game of the Twin Lakes Holiday Tournament.

The Berries improved to 10-0 and will play for the tournament championship against Class 3A No. 5 Western Boone (12-0) at 8 p.m. tonight.

The Berries had a strong start against Western (8-2) and jumped out to a 38-26 lead at halftime. They led by at least eight points the rest of the way and led by as much as 58-40 with 2:27 remaining after a Nakeya Penny free throw.

Logan hit 8 of 11 3-pointers in the first half to jump out to the 12-point halftime lead. At one point freshman Maddie Dalton hit four 3s in a row to help get the early separation.

“She can do that,” Logan coach Jerry Hoover said. “But there’s an awful lot of other things she has to work on. She’s got to be surer with the basketball. We had 15 errors in that game. If we don’t have 15 errors in that game there’s no ballgame.”

Whitney Jennings once again had a big game with 25 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, four steals and a block. She was 9 of 18 from the field, 3 of 5 from 3-point range and 4 of 6 from the foul line.

Penny had 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. She was 4 of 8 from the field, 4 of 5 from the foul line and hit her only 3-point attempt.

Dalton finished with 12 points. Sydney Bullard had eight points and six boards. Samantha Kain chipped in two points and three boards.

“Syd Bullard played a very, very good basketball game,” Hoover said. “Samantha Kain had a pretty good basketball game. Nakeya helped us a great deal on the boards. She didn’t yesterday but she did today.

“I thought we looked like a basketball team with a purpose. It seemed to me that the whole team had a purpose and they wanted to win that game and they went about doing it. Needless to say I’m pleased with their performance.”

Raven Black led Western with 12 points and seven rebounds. Carley O’Neal had 11 points and four steals and was 3 of 6 from 3-point range. Caitlyn O’Neal and Jessica Givens each had eight points, with Givens adding six rebounds and Caitlyn O’Neal adding five assists. Kiersten Durbin chipped in six points.

The Panthers entered as the 13th best scoring defense in the state at 32.1 ppg, while the Berries entered as the fourth best scoring offense at 73.4 ppg.

The Berries were efficient shooting from the field at 20 of 38 (52.6 percent) including 8 of 15 from long range. Western made 6 of 17 3-pointers in the first half but just 1 of 10 in the second.

“They’re a good basketball team,” Hoover said. “What they’re doing is they’re loading up, they’re going to try to win a state championship because they’ve got those two from Taylor that are nice-looking athletes. They didn’t shoot well from 3 the second half and that helped us a lot. We might have had something to do with it. I don’t know if we closed out better or anything. But they didn’t shoot well from 3 the second half and that’s their game.”

Western Boone defeated Carroll 54-38 in the later semifinal.
