Whiting drops Pioneer in overtime

WHITING —  It would never be surprising to see Pioneer and Whiting meet in November in football. It was a little surprising to see them meet in December in basketball as Friday night’s game was the first-ever between the two schools in roundball.

And the team from the Region came out on top in this one by a field goal and a safety in a 50-45 win in overtime for Whiting.

“It was a pretty ugly one,” lamented Pioneer coach Austin Cowley, who’s squad dropped to 1-5 on the season. “In the second half they turned on a fullcourt press. That wasn’t what got us beat. Their halfcourt trap was able to affect us. We couldn’t rebound and we couldn’t handle the ball well enough to pull out the win. We had the lead most of the game.”

The Panthers came up with a defensive stand at the end of regulation but the Oilers (2-4) grabbed the lead early in the extra session and held on for the win.

“We struggled pulling down big rebounds,” Cowley said. “They had bigger guys and they were pulling down offensive rebounds on any given possession and that really got them back in the game and beat us.”

The Panthers hit 11 of 19 free throws in the game and left some points on the board there.

Sam Kiser led Pioneer with 12 points. J.P. Smith scored nine and Chad Clifford had six on a pair of 3-pointers. Caleb Kindley and Brad Biggs chipped in four points apiece.

“It was a game we should have won,” Cowley said. “It was a very, very physical game.”

Pioneer travels to Argos tonight.
