Sports briefs for Dec. 20

WINAMAC — Winamac’s girls basketball team was edged by visiting Tippecanoe Valley 52-51 Thursday night.

The Warriors outscored the Vikings 25-12 in the second half, but a 40-26 halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

“The game was a tale of two halves,” Winamac coach Jeff Wagner said. “We allowed 40 in the first half and only 12 in the 2nd. The unfortunate thing is we could not get it done tonight.

“I was really happy with the team’s second half game. Now we have to put two halves together. I believe we are improving, and I like where we are headed.”

Steph Shorter had a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Warriors (4-5). Bethany Brogdon added 17 points and eight assists. Stephanie Crist and Raychel Davis chipped in five points apiece. Davis added a game-high 14 rebounds.

Winamac made just 1 of 13 3-point attempts in dropping its fourth straight contest.

Cara Hoffman led the Vikings (5-4) with 20 points. Meredith Brouyette had 12 and Caylie Teel added eight.

Winamac hosts North White at 2:30 p.m. Saturday for a Midwest Conference game.

Harrison sweeps past Logan swim teams

Harrison recorded two wins in the pool Thursday at Logansport.

The Raiders defeated the Berries 119-67 in the girls meet and 126-57 in the boys meet.

The Logan girls recorded seven first-place finishes but Harrison’s depth was too much. Rebecca Yeoman and Jennifer Crafford were triple winners to lead the Logan effort.

Yeoman won the 50 and 100 free, and Crafford took the 200 IM and 100 breast. Brooke Bullard won diving. Isabelle Kraud won the 500 free. Kraud, Crafford, Emily Clark and Yeoman won the 200 medley relay.

“It was another tough meet. We swam a good team tonight,” LHS coach Heidi Hendricks-Knight said. “We had good individual swims. Jen Crafford had a PR in the 200 IM. She also had swam great in the 100 breast. Katie Easter swam a PR in the 100 free.”

Dustin Clements had wins in the 50 free and 100 back to lead the Logansport boys.

“The guys swam really well tonight,” Hendricks-Knight said. “Zane Densborn had a good swim in the IM. Marcus Record had a good race in the 50 free.”

DePaul women defeat Pitt in Vegas

LAS VEGAS — Megan Podkowa recorded her second career double-double and led the DePaul women’s basketball team to a 77-63 win over Pittsburgh in the opening game of the Duel in the Desert at UNLV’s Cox Pavilion on Thursday.

DePaul has won its last two games and improves to 6-3 on the season, while the loss halts a two-game Pittsburgh winning streak and the Panthers fell to 6-5.

Jasmine Penny played just 16 minutes in the contest before fouling out. She had four points, four rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot in the win. She was just 2 of 10 from the field.

Chanise Jenkins and Podkowa each scored 13 points which paced five Blue Demons in double figures. Podkowa’s second career double-double came with 10 rebounds.

DePaul returns to the court today to take on Washington at 1:30 p.m. EST. All games will be streamed live on www.tgvn.tv.
