Prep: Logan wrestlers go 1-3 in annual Early Bird Invite

Winamac girls move to 4-0 with win over Manchester

Logansport’s wrestling team had a tough go at it at its annual Early Bird Invitational Saturday, going 1-3 to start the season.

Logan’s lone win of the day was against Northwestern (51-27). The losses were to Twin Lakes (59-14), Maconaquah (40-39) and Winamac (45-36).

Logan coach Frank Patacsil said he has a young and inexperienced squad.

“Nine of the 14 kids graduated. We have quality kids, they all seem to be stuck in the same weight classes. We have a couple good kids trying to find a place to make the lineup,” he said.

“We have a lot of inexperience. At one point we had five kids who were first-year wrestlers wrestling and in the same match had three freshmen that were wrestling in middle school last year. About half the team is limited in experience.”

Twin Lakes went 4-0 on the day, and the Indians are still guided this season by Monticello mayor Ken Houston. The Indians were followed by Winamac (3-1), Mac (2-2), Logan (1-3) and Northwestern (0-4).

Logan’s run of winning three straight sectional titles is certainly in jeopardy this season with Twin Lakes and Class A No. 4-ranked Lewis Cass in the hunt.

“We still have it as a goal,” Patacsil said. “We need to improve every week. If we do that, I don’t know ... we’re not going to concede it in Week 1, that’s for sure. That tournament is won in January, not November.

“Twin Lakes looked pretty solid [Saturday]. They beat us pretty handily. Twin Lakes and Lewis Cass are the front-runners. Rensselaer has pretty good kids back. We’ve got our work cut out for us, that’s for sure.”

Jake Pomasl (152 pound weight class) and Zach Arnett (160) each went 2-0 on the day for the Berries. Josh Brandt (126) and Tyler Williams (145) each went 1-0. Jacob Graf (106), Ryan Schrock (132) and Ernesto Galvan (170 and 182) each went 3-1. Daniel Dominguez (126) went 2-1. Sheldon Corcoran (120) went 2-2. Zeke Alvarez (138), Gerald Silva (138) and Justin Brumett (152) each went 1-1.

Corcoran, a junior, is a returning state qualifier.

“He went 2-2. He gave up a defensive pin. He was putting a guy on his back and just got himself in a bad situation and they called a pin. Then he got beat by a pretty good kid from Maconaquah,” Patacsil said.

Patacsil mentioned Pomasl, Dominguez, Schrock, Arnett and Graf as other top grapplers this season.

The Berries return to action on Nov. 29 when they host Huntington North.
