Brotherly love helps Dilts

by Beau Wicker
Pharos-Tribune sports editor

Charlie Dilts’s athletic career has benefited from brotherly love.

The Winamac senior’s older brother William introduced him to sports at a young age and has been both a role model and one of his biggest supporters in his athletic endeavors.

Dilts also received some brotherly love, of sorts, from his peers and Winamac fans when he was voted as the 2007 Loganland MVP in football in the Pharos-Tribune’s online poll this past fall, when he passed for over 1,100 yards and 13 touchdowns as Winamac’s starting quarterback.

Dilts also earned All-Midwest Conference and all-state honorable mention honors in football. He was a two-year starter in basketball for the Warriors and earned MWC honorable mention honors this past season. In golf he recently placed fourth at the Midwest Conference Meet to earn All-MWC honors for the Warriors’ conference champion team.

After graduation Dilts plans to attend Purdue University and major in ag business management.

Q. Of the sports that you play, which is your favorite? Why?

A. I love all the sports I play but my favorite is golf because it is a sport that you can play your entire life.

Q. How did you first get started in sports? At what age?

A. My brother William had me playing sports probably when I was about four. We would play pig on our little hoop inside our house for hours.

Q. Do you have any family members that played sports?

A. I’ve been around sports my whole life. Both my parents played sports in high school as well as my brother and all of my cousins.

Q. Have you ever played a sport that you were not successful at?

A. To be honest, not really because if I wasn’t good at something I worked hard to make myself good at it.

Q. How do you feel you’ve improved as an athlete since you first started playing?

A. I think that I’ve become stronger both mentally and physically. I’ve learned the value of a team and that you can’t do anything alone.

Q. What kind of person would your teammates say you are?

A. My teammates would probably say that I’m the comedian. I know how to lighten the mood but I also know when it’s time to be serious.

Q. Who do you try to emulate in your life? Why?

A. I try to imitate my older brother William. He is six years older then me and was always a good role model. He’s the one that taught me a lot about sports and made me into the athlete I am today.

Q. What experiences have you had in sports that have made you the athlete you are today?

A. I had to watch one of my good friends Addison Elston sit out various seasons and it allowed me to appreciate the time I got to play and to thank God for keeping me injury free for all four years of high school.

Q. What is something that not everyone knows about you.

A. That I attend Bible study every Wednesday morning. Also that my cat’s full name is Kitty Meow Meow Meow Chicha Bow Wow Wow Kitty Meow Meow Chicha Bow Wow Chich for short!

Q. What is your favorite memory of playing sports at your school?

A. Beating Seeger in sectionals this year. We were down two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and we scored back-to-back touchdowns to win.

Q. What are your goals for your future? Do you plan to go to college?

A. This fall I plan on attending Purdue University to major in ag business management.

Next week: Read about the accomplishments of an outstanding Loganland athlete.
