Bowers, Zebras shut down Kings

Caston player ties state record in Comets’ rout.

From Staff Reports

Rochester’s Mitch Bowers held the Cass baseball team to three hits in a complete-game effort as the Zebras won 4-2 Monday.

Drew Fowler had two of the Kings’ three hits including a two-run homer in the second inning. The Zebras (15-9) answered with a two-run homer in the sixth and two runs in the seventh for the win.

Damon Foreman (3-2) allowed eight hits and one walk while striking out seven.

“(Bowers) is supposed to be one of the best pitchers in the state,” Cass coach Greg Marschand said. “He did a good job of not losing his cool when we jumped out to the lead. Damon also did a whale of a job. He pitched well.”

The Kings (10-9) host Caston on Wednesday for senior night.

Caston 17, Oregon-Davis 0 (5 innings)

The Comets (16-8) ended a six-game skid by throttling winless Oregon-Davis (0-17).

Caston had eight extra base hits in the contest, including home runs by Matt Turnpaugh and Ben Peterson. Turnpaugh’s blast was his 10th of the year.

Ryley Williams was hit by a pitch for the 22nd time this season, tying a state record.

Shawn Rentschler tossed a one-hit shutout, improving to 3-1.

“It was a good game to get our bats going a little bit,” Caston coach Blake Mollenkopf said. “We’ve been struggling the past week with our swings and this was a good get-right game for our offense.

“Rentschler had an excellent performance on the mound. He threw strikes and worked quickly, and we played solid defense.”

The Comets host Argos on Thursday.

Logansport 8, McCutcheon 7 (JV)

Zach Bennett allowed one earned run in five innings, striking out four, as the Berries improved to 19-5.
