Comets outlast Warriors

After splitting with Wabash over the weekend, the Caston baseball team found its stroke at the plate, earning a team-total of 14 hits in a 10-9 win over North Miami Tuesday night.
Elliot Rowe picked up his seventh win of the season, despite giving up nine hits and nine runs (two earned). He also struck out 12 and walked six.
Comet coach Blake Mollenkopf said although his ace didn’t have his best stuff against the Warriors, he and his team found a way to squeak out a win.
“Elliot threw well enough to win, but he didn’t have A-stuff tonight,” he said. “He is a good pitcher, and he found a way to win.”
Caston had numerous batters pick up extra-base hits. Evan Pulliam, Matt Turnpaugh, Josh Hauser, Ben Peterson, Rowe, Ryan Williams, and Chanse Baldwin all hit doubles for the Comets. Ethan Zartman drilled a home run as well.
Caston (15-3, 8-1 in Midwest Conference) will travel to Frontier on Saturday for a big doubleheader against the Falcons, who are 10-0 in conference play this season.
Cass 10, Eastern 6
King sophomore Damon Forman hit for the cycle Tuesday night in Cass’ win over the Mid-Indiana Conference rival Comets.
Along with Forman’s single, double, triple and home run, he also drove in six runs for Cass (8-5, 3-2 in MIC).
Ryne Stover earned the win, going the distance.
Ethan Watkins picked up three hits for the Kings, while seniors Colton Zeck and Rory Mannering earned two hits each. Keith Lee hit a triple and Evan DePew nabbed a two-bagger.
The Kings will play host to Peru on Thursday.
Pioneer 15, Tippy Valley 8
Panther hurler Aron Holcomb picked up a win in his first start Tuesday night against the Vikings.
The sophomore gave up no runs in five innings of work, and Senior Jim Smith finished out the game for Pioneer.
Cody Conn led the offense, picking up four hits, including a home run, and drove in four. Mitchel Petrie earned three hits, including a double and a homer, and collected four RBIs as well.
Devon Lee scored three runs and Smith added a double to the Panthers’ offensive effort.
Pioneer will host North White for a Midwest Conference doubleheader.
Carroll 4, Clinton Prairie 1
The Cougars spread the hits around Tuesday night in a win over the Hoosier Heartland Conference rival Gophers.
Chandler Keown and Drew Yoder each hit RBI-singles while Thomas Gillam also picked up a hit for Carroll (7-9). Brad Benson earned a sacrifice as well.
Junior ace Riley Eller picked up his fourth win of the season by striking out 11 and walking none.
The Cougars will travel to Clinton Prairie tonight.
Softball
Huntington North 2, Logansport 1
The Lady Berries struggled at the plate and dropped their second North Central Conference game of the season against the host Lady Vikings.
Molly Long had a solid game inside the pitchers circle, striking out 12 and allowing zero walks.
At the plate, Darrien Harris earned an RBI single, while Gabby McIntire picked up two hits for Logan (14-7, 3-2 in NCC).
The Berries will look to even the season series tonight when they host Huntington.
Cass 2, Eastern 1
The Lady Kings and Lady Comets did all of their scoring in one inning in a pitchers dual in Walton.
Cass pitcher Amy Sites gave up seven hits and struck out three while holding Eastern to one run to pick up the victory.
Molly Naphew picked up two hits, and drove in both Cass runs in the third.
The Kings (8-9) will travel to Peru tonight.
Winamac 17, Caston 3
The Winamac softball team traveled to Caston Tuesday night and came home with a Midwest Conference victory over the Lady Comets.
The Warriors belted out 17 hits on the night. Whitlee Scott was 4-5 with two RBI's, Erika Redweik went 3-5 with 3 RBI's, and Rachel Younger was 3-5.
Rachel Younger started the game on the mound for Winamac, but was relieved after one inning because of soreness in her shoulder. Whitlee Scott came in the and went the rest of the way for the Warriors. Scott picked up her eighth win of the season.
No stats for Caston were available at press time.
The Warriors 17-5 (5-0 MWC) will play Frontier in a Midwest Conference game Friday night at Winamac. The Warriors will be recognizing their seniors before the game. The JV teams will play following the varsity game.
Boys Track
Logansport 78, Twin Lakes 52
The Berries earned a non-conference win against the Indians Tuesday night.
Earning first-place finishes for Logan were Kyle Overway in the 1600 and 3200m runs, Brandon Wilson in the 400m run and the high jump. Brice Roads in the 800m run, Joel Konkle in the discus and Jarred Buzzbee in the long jump.
Konkle, Derek Rowe, Andrew Bowles, Keenan Bergstedt, Rene Flores and Joel Gibbs all earned second-place finishes for the Berries.
The 4 x 800 team of Wilson, Ulises Contreras, Flores and Roads took first, as did Austin Mills, Flores, Roads and Wilson and the 4 x 400.
Pioneer 79, Winamac 78
The Panthers topped the reigning Midwest Conference Champions Tuesday night in dual-meet action.
The Team of Josh Layer, Ao Wang, Logan Brock, Tony Williams won the 1600m relay (the last event of the night), by beating the Winamac team by two-tenths of a second with a season-best time of 3:39.3.
Other winners for Pioneer were, Justin Ruff in the shot put and discus, Ryan Bice in the 1600 and 3200 runs, Nate Grigsby in the long jump, Tony Williams in the 400 run and Layer in the 300 hurdles.
The team of Grigsby, Wang, Winn and Bryce Kiser won the 400 relay. Bice, Williams, Brandon Filby and Hansen won the 3200 relay.
Girls Track
Logansport 75, Twin Lakes 59
The Lady Berries picked up a victory at home Tuesday night against the Lady Indians.
Picking up first-place finishes for Logan were Baleigh Deitrich in the 100 and 300 hurdles, Jessica Record in the long jump, Brittany Bullard in the pole vault, Bri Bullard in the 200 dash, Kaylee Ervin in the high jump, Michelle Cline in the 400 run and Kim Ladd in the 100.
Second-place finishes were earned by Bri Bullard in the 100 dash, Deitrich in the long jump, Princessa Rennewanz in the 400 run, Ashlynn Morrill in the 1600 and 3200 runs and Natasha Bergstedt in the 300 hurdles.
Annika Gaiani, Ladd, Bri Bullard and Deitrich won the 4 x 100 relay, while Rennewanz, Taylor Howell, Cline and Alex Wamsley took first in the 4 x 400 relay.
Girls Tennis
Cass 3, Eastern 2
The Lady Kings improved to 4-1 in the Mid-Indiana Conference with a win over the Lady Comets Tuesday night.
The No. 1 doubles team of Kristen Sailors and Alisha Allison earned a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) in the most competitive match of the night.
Sailors rolled her ankle midway through the second set with the score tied 2-2, but fought through the pain through the final two sets. Allison played strong the rest of the way, running down a lot of balls that her partner normally would have gotten, and the duo picked up the deciding victory.
Other winners for Cass were Alysa Luching at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-2), the No. 2.
Twin Lakes 3, Carroll 2
The Lady Cougars dropped a hard-fought match Tuesday night against the Lady Indians.
Picking up wins for Carroll were Kaylee Morehouse at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-4), and the No. 1 doubles team of Morgan Yoder and Katie Brewster (6-3, 6-4).
The Cougars will play host to Western on Thursday.
