The Lewis Cass Kings did something their veteran coach, Greg Marschand, had never seen before in a baseball game — they hit four home runs in a row and five in one inning as they won at Oak Hill 11-4 on Monday.
The Kings entered the seventh inning with a 6-4 lead before the offensive fireworks went off. Leadoff man Drew Fowler led off the frame with a home run. After a groundout, Rory Mannering, Brody Edgerly, Colton Zeck and Evan DePew went deep back-to-back-to-back-to-back.
“I’ve never seen anything like that, and they haven’t either, but it sure did excite everybody,” Marschand said. “I’m very pleased with the way we’ve been hitting the ball. Hopefully we’ll continue to hit the ball that well. We’ve had letdowns defensively and letdowns with our pitching this year, but we’ve hit the ball well all year.”
Marschand added the dimensions at Oak Hill’s ballpark are normal for high school and the wind wasn’t a big factor in any of the home runs.
“They have a nice field, a nice park,” he said. “Hitting is contagious and we got on a roll.”
Jeff Marschand also homered in the contest to go with a pair of singles. Fowler had three hits to go with his home run.
Mannering also tripled and Zeck also doubled to go with their home runs. Keith Lee added a double.
Sophomore Andrew Troutman got the win on the mound in his varsity debut with in 3 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Kings (7-5) travel to Eastern tonight for a Mid-Indiana Conference matchup. Cass enters 2-2 in league play.
Pioneer 8, Maconaquah 7
Doryn Wolf had a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Panthers (8-9) past the Braves.
The rally began with a Cory Bohm double. Jim Smith drew a walk and Andrew Glassburn got a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Wolf then singled on a line drive to center to end the game.
The Panthers trailed 5-3 in the sixth before a four-run rally gave them their first lead of the game. Maconaquah answered with two runs in the seventh to tie it at 7-all.
“We were down much of the game and we never said die,” Pioneer coach Dick Farrer said. “It would have been tough if we would have got all the way back and then lost again, but we stayed positive.”
JD Bridge relieved Wolf on the mound in the seventh inning to get the win and improve to 1-1 on the year.
“Wolf did a great job on the mound and so did Bridge,” Farrer said. “We only had one error so we played pretty good defense.”
Wolf had three hits, including a double, to go along with his game-winning single. Bridge homered and had a pair of base hits. Mitchell Petrie doubled and finished with four RBIs.
Pioneer travels to Tippecanoe Valley tonight.

Long allowed just one hit and fanned 15 in the shutout.
At the plate for Logan, Lauren Vitello had two base hits and an RBI. Darrien Harris had a base hit and three RBIs.

Carroll 9, Caston 5
Freshman Victoria Henderson earned her third win of the season while the Lady Cougars (4-14) made the Lady Comets (5-11) pay for their seven fielding errors.
Henderson allowed five runs on nine hits and one walk, striking out two. Caitlin Frey took the loss for Caston. She allowed four earned runs on five hits and eight walks, striking out 11.
Caston coach Tim McCready said the seven errors were too much for his squad to overcome.
“In an earned run game we win, but that’s not how the game is played,” he said. “We still have to work on our defense. It seems like its a different area each game we have to work on. If we play good defense like we have earlier in the year, we’ll win more games. We hit the ball well tonight. It’s a good example of how you can outhit a team and still lose the game. We’ll keep working on it.”
Caston’s Shelby Loeffler had two triples among her three hits in the contest and added an RBI and two runs scored. Christine Rentschler had two hits including a double. Frey, McKenna Harmon and Mariah Moss all had RBIs.
The Cougars trailed 5-3 in the fourth inning before they scored six unanswered runs in the next two frames. Krystal Brazel had a two-run single in Carroll’s four-run fourth.
Brooke Yoder had a base hit and scored three runs. Brazel and Elissa Hudspeth each scored a pair of runs. Henderson, Shelby Dawson and Quinci Eller all added safeties.
“Overall it was one of the better games we’ve played all year,” Carroll coach Chad Myers said. “We still had some errors (4), but we bunted more than we had tonight and put it in play and they made some errors. We didn’t play flawless, but I was happy.”
Carroll hosts Clinton Prairie tonight for a Hoosier Heartland Conference doubleheader. Caston hosts Class 2A No. 7 Winamac for a Midwest Conference tilt tonight followed with a makeup game against Triton shortly following the Winamac contest.
