The Logansport Utility Service Board voted in favor of cutting an originally proposed 5 percent increase in LMU’s contribution to elected and appointed city officials’ wages down to 3 percent at its monthly meeting Tuesday.
Board member Todd Miller opposed the originally suggested 5 percent increase and moved to amend the resolution outlining the wages to keep the contribution to officials’ wages the same until finances improve at LMU.
“We can’t afford a lot of shifts,” he said. “We’re struggling to find money to give our own employees raises.”
Jay King, the board’s newly elected president, agreed, questioning why the board should approve a 5 percent raise for public officials when the most recent raise it approved for LMU employees was only 1 percent.
“It does seem a little odd when we’re doing 1 percent for our own employees,” he said.
Miller maintained he was not opposed to public officials receiving raises. He said his disagreement stemmed from not wanting to take further from LMU’s already-strapped funds.
“I’m not judging the raises, I’m judging what it will do to LMU,” he said.
The amendment proposed by Miller to keep LMU’s contribution to the wages the same failed to acquire a majority.
Following this, board member Marty Monahan proposed an amendment stipulating a 3 percent raise, which passed.
The majority of Logansport City Council members have voiced support for a 5 percent raise for the city’s contribution to elected and appointed officials’ wages. There is still a public hearing on the matter before they vote whether to adopt it.
Logansport Clerk-Treasurer Carol Sue Hayworth said LMU and the city’s contributions to officials’ wages are about even.
