Recently I saw a sign that said “Had Enough? Vote Republican!” I began to wonder what one would need to have “had enough” of to consider voting Republican.
Even setting aside issues of maturity and humility, it’s hard to view the current city government as a rousing success for the GOP. For a party that proclaims government is the problem and private enterprise is the solution, they don’t practice what they preach. We’ve seen two boards (it’s early) ransacked of members who were business professionals (and overwhelmingly Republican) in favor of elected officials. Score one for unquestioning fealty.
We can put another check in the column of fiscal conservatives who have appropriated $130,000 for … TBA. Add in the $250,000 for a movie theater that will at best employ four people full time and a budget that includes bonuses for elected officials (and their appointees) who have been in office only 10 months, and you have to question why the tea party isn’t picketing. At least we know that one of our local Republicans is against spending money on “… a study of stuff we already know.” Good thing he wasn’t around to talk sense into Copernicus or Galileo.
Not that county government is much better; it’s mostly the same story. Don’t like the judgment of a citizen board? (Sensing a theme?) Just replace them with yourself.
I’ll let the sad state of the fire district speak for itself. Though I would ask, is anybody in the fire district actually paying 30 cents per $100 of assessed value as was claimed in the Jan. 20, 2010, Pharos-Tribune? And has anybody seen a township trustee involved in that decision lately, besides on a milk carton?
I’d like to be able to say we could credit Republicans at the state level for the beautiful Ivy Tech campus, but then I’d have to point out that our current state representative was for it before he was against it. Of course, it wasn’t just him, every Republican in the House voted against HB 1001; it was important that they put party before policy. Sometimes you’ve got to stamp your feet and flail your fist to be taken seriously.
I cannot fathom what the local Republicans would constitute an improvement over, Somali warlords? If insanity is doing the same things over, expecting a different result, I fear for the owner of that sign.
