AMEEN: What exercise can do for you

We never thought we would see it, but spring is finally here! Sunshine and warmer weather inspire us all to get outside and move more! And it’s a good thing it does because exercise can do great things for your health! Not that this surprises anyone, but in case you haven’t seen a list lately of reasons of why you should exercise, let’s look at this one.

If you strive to get regular exercise, it can help you:

Lose weight and keep it off.

Have more energy and get more done.

Make your heart and lungs stronger.

Make your muscles stronger and firmer.

Keep your bones strong.

Prevent falls.

Get more “good” cholesterol (HDL) in your blood.

Lower your blood pressure.

Prevent diabetes.

Sleep better.

Cut down on stress.

Feel happier!

Stand taller and look great.

Feel better about yourself and your life!

Wow, what a list! It’s hard to argue with most of those reasons. But sometimes the hardest part is finding the time to do it! Keeping a few guidelines in mind can make it a little easier for you to FIT it into your schedule.

Guidelines for exercising

F = Frequency (how often): Try for 5 to 7 days a week. See, you can still have two days as a break if you want to take them!

I = Intensity (how hard): Briskly. Wait, what does that mean? You should feel a little short of breath, but not breathless.

T = Time (how long): Try for at least 30 minutes per day. Even 10 minutes of exercise done three times per day still counts.

Exercise helps you slowly but surely. Remember the story about the tortoise and the hare? You don’t have to commit all of your energy to doing as much exercise as possible – just do it at your own pace. Consistency is the key. It can take up to 6 weeks or more to see or feel a difference. At that point, it may become a habit, much like eating or sleeping, so make sure you’re enjoying it, too!

Logansport Memorial Hospital is committed to keeping our patients “well and good” from your head to your toes! Exercise is a great way to do that. Here’s to your health this spring and to all of the great things that exercise can do for you!
