Wow, I saw on Facebook that you can buy a painting of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow on velvet for about 100 British pounds (that’s $168 American).
I love Johnny Depp. He’s by far my favorite actor and I especially like him in his incarnation as Cap’n Jack. But I’m sorry, despite my recent interest in art, I have no desire to have Johnny Depp hanging on my wall at home.
It’s the same with Jimmie Johnson in NASCAR. I am a huge JJ fan. I root for him passionately during the races. I hold my breath on restarts. I get up and pace when he’s leading with only a few laps remaining, terrified that some fluke will steal the win from him. I even have a few little memorabilia-type things on a shelf and a JJ license plate.
By contrast, I belong to a couple of Jimmie Johnson fan sites and they often post photos of all their Jimmie stuff. They wear Team 48 clothing and their dogs wear Team 48 collars and their kids sleep with Jimmie Johnson teddy bears. They have curio cabinets full of die-cast cars in every paint scheme Jimmie has ever run. They have Jimmie Johnson recliner chairs, Jimmie Johnson afghans, Jimmie Johnson comforters on their beds, even Jimmie Johnson seat covers on their toilets. They bowl with Jimmie Johnson bowling balls and drink out of Jimmie Johnson cups.
Their birthday cakes are decorated to look like Jimmie’s car and at Christmas, they dedicate entire trees to JJ and the team — blue and gold bulbs and bows and 48 ornaments.
They even have their love of the team tattooed on their bodies — an entire car on their back, a gold 48 on their shoulder, Jimmie’s face on an upper arm.
