Some ideas for whatthe city should do
An article in the Pharos-Tribune a few days ago pointed out that the local swimming pool belonged to the “citizens of Logansport.” It also pointed out, as it has over and over for several years, that the pool is in dire disrepair, needing upgraded or replaced, and that it was losing thousands of gallons of water and that it, in all likelihood, would be closing at the end of this swimming season.
The writer of the article was looking for suggestions. Here are some of mine.
Rather than Logansport taking ownership of the Memorial Home, not now, and never will it be, a huge money-maker, how about the city taking ownership of the old Exide and BTR factory properties? Done laughing? On one of the two properties, a modern water park with a wave machine, a small sandy beach, snack vendors, lazy river, tube rentals, etc. could be built that would serve Logansport and the surrounding areas well into the future.
Now, I don’t get out much anymore, but I can’t tell you where the closest wave machine is located. People drive to King’s Island, Cedar Point, Santa Claus, Indiana, etc. on daytrips. Why not some of the people from those areas driving to Logansport? Might there be room for a small number of rental cabins? The second property could be used as a parking lot with picnic areas and a shuttle service back and forth to the water park.
We all know that Tower Park is not large enough to build a water park befitting a first-class city that Logansport strives to be. And what new large employer is going to locate/relocate to a city with no swimming pool? We can’t promote the fact that we have two fair-sized rivers to swim in a couple months a year, and as many miles of wading paths as walking/biking trails, and they are all free, not even bringing in enough money to cover the costs of upkeep.
