I have been a baseball mom for the last 15 years. I love the sport, I love watching my kids play baseball, and I love the interaction that my kids get from playing a team sport.
What I don’t love or even like is the favoritism that I have seen over the years for certain players, no matter how hard your kids work in practice or in games (not that I have that problem this year thanks to a good coach) and when you pay your player fees (which seem to go up every year), yet you have to sell fundraisers. Now, I realize that some fundraising is required for all of the costs associated with operating a facility such as we have in this town and I am more than willing to do so — to an extent. What I absolutely do not agree with is how this year, our players in the Cal Ripken League were informed that they are required to sell at least 10 items or the parents would have to pay the difference.
I pay my kids’ players fees every year, I spend money at the concessions stands, volunteer my time when needed, and make sure that my child sells as much as he can in his fundraisers.
I also have six kids under my roof, most of which are in sports and have players’ fees and sell fundraisers all at the same time. There comes a time when people are fundraisered out and moneyed out! My family absolutely cannot possibly buy more from my kids, my co-workers and neighbors either.
I am extremely hesitant to let my child go door to door in this day and age, so please tell me how someone can be “required” to sell 10 items and if they are not, they are given a difficult time when trying to turn in the fundraiser? What happened to getting sponsors for the teams? What happened to having things like car washes, carnivals, local businesses donating to the upkeep of the facility, etc.?
I will make sure that my son sells his 10 items because I will be spending money that I don’t have to buy the last few things; however, I am thanking God that my son moves up to Babe Ruth baseball next year where the player fees are not as high and they players will not be required to sell the 10 items.
