PUBLIC FORUM: Sunflowers a blessing; good neighbor will be missed

Field of sunflowersa blessing to passer-by

What a gift! Thanks to the farmers responsible for the beautiful fields of sunflowers on 100 North between 700 West and 800 West! I look forward to any drive that takes me to the midst of this heart-warming sight. When they first bloomed, I was unprepared. I was driving on a sunny morning and saw the blooms on the right, and while my mouth was opening with a gasp at the beauty of it all, I came to the field on my left.

I had to stop the car to be in the middle of such a sight, all those little heads looking in unison at the morning sun, as if singing praises of worship. I laughed out loud with joy. Those heads are still facing east, but bowed with the weight of sunflower seeds. I know my time of appreciating their beauty will soon end with harvest. I pray for a bountiful harvest for you farmers, so you will be motivated to plant those beauties again next year.

Thanks, farmers.

Good neighborwill be greatly missed

We knew him as Joe.

He was our neighbor for 20-plus years. There was nothing fancy about him but he sure did help you when you needed it. Many times through the year, he came over and helped us get our lawn mowers going.

In the winter, he would be out there plowing our sidewalk and driveway. When the wind blew hard and brought down the big tree limbs, he would come over with his saw and cut them into smaller pieces so we could carry them to the alley.

He wouldn’t take any money for anything he did but he sure did like the banana bred I baked him. I am sure for those who knew him will never forget all the kindness he did and never expect anything in return.

May our good neighbor and friend Ronnie Joe Waymire rest in peace.

You deserved the Good Neighbor Award.
