Thorns & Roses Dec. 19

Roses

• To the volunteers who made last weekend’s many Christmas events a reality. Folks had lots to choose from as Delphi held its 19th annual Old Fashioned Christmas and Twelve Mile staged its 38th annual Christmas Pageant. The weekend’s activities also included celebrations in Walton and Galveston in addition to a Winter Wonderland at Logansport’s Dykeman Park on Sunday afternoon. It was an all-around great weekend, drawing visitors to the area from across the state. Congratulations to everyone involved in putting the events together.

• To Logansport city officials on restoring funding for a corridor enhancement program. The program is designed to encourage businesses to dress up the appearance of properties lining the city’s main thoroughfares. How the city presents itself along these major streets will go a long way toward forming the first impression this community leaves with its visitors. And that first impression will have a major impact on businesses and individuals trying to decide whether to make this city their home. The enhancement program is an important tool for dressing up Logansport’s image. Our hope is that city officials will find a way to continue funding it in spite of a difficult financial outlook.

• To prisoners and staff members at the Miami Correctional Facility who have joined in a recent food drive for the Helping Hands Food Pantry and The Salvation Army in Peru. The collection ended on Wednesday. As of last week, the inmates and staff members had collected three grocery carts filled with food.

• To player of the year Erika Redweik and the other members of the 2008 All-Loganland volleyball team. Redweik’s skill, determination and senior leadership led the Warriors to their first-ever volleyball sectional title this year. The team, which was selected for the first time this year, was chosen by the Pharos-Tribune sports staff and the seven Loganland volleyball coaches.
