Thanks for help in time of need

As I sit here and write this with a heavy heart, I want to thank everyone who touched Glenrose Bunn’s life in any way.

To the Good Family Funeral Home, to Rev. Thad Stewart and wife, Laura; to the Burton and Richland Center Church Ladies for the delicious food; to my sons, Ralph and Jody; to my grandsons, Bryan, Bill, Chad, and great-grandson, Justin, for being pall bearers; to my daughter-in-law, Nancy, who sang and played the guitar with friend, Ron Baker; to my daughter-in-law, Barb, for doing the photos, and also for the food, beautiful flowers, cards and money to different organizations. And to Hickory Creek Church who really helped me the last month of my mother’s life. Bless all of you.

Thanks for support of fall fundraiser

What a night! Thanks to everyone who helped make this fall fundraiser a huge success. There are so many people to thank, but I feel that I need to mention a few.

For entertainment, we had Sam Piercy on the piano with Judy Masters singing. They are so good. Someone new in the crowd wanted to know, “Who is that singer — she sounds like a famous star.” She is a star — a star from Logansport.

Then there’s a special person who is always volunteering to help with his expertise, Dan Gingrich, who makes everything so clear. I would be remiss if I did not say a thank you to all the people who prepared the appetizers. (Hopefully, they will help again.)

The Decorating and Planning Committee did a great job. At the onset, I prayed that someone would come forward and help, and then the “Angels” appeared: Jenise Burkhart, Barrie McClain, Myra Vanecek, Dixie Baker and Roma Winegardner. Of course, we had to have auctioneers, so our team of “S&S,” Scott Kraud and Skip Kuker, helped our real auctioneer, Larry Isaacs. Thanks to you guys for a super job!

Thanks to the table sponsors and to the many merchants and people who donated items for the auction.

The “real stars” of the evening, though, were you, “the people,” who attended and made this event such a success. Thank you!

Thanks for taking time for a child

We would like to thank the Logansport Fire Department at the central firehouse for taking time out of their day on Oct. 21 to show our son around. Everybody was extremely polite and professional. Steve guided him on a very entertaining and educational tour. Our son loves tools and fire trucks, and he had a such a great time. It really made his day.

So, thank you Steve and the Logansport Fire Department for your dedication to our community and the little ones in it!

Government must stop raising taxes

Recent reports tell us that assessed property values have risen across Indiana which, of course, means that property taxes have risen. Everyone knows that this recession, which has hit Indiana hard, began with the real estate market bubble bursting. The market prices of homes have decreased for several months now, yet the taxes on many of them, as reported, have risen. Home foreclosures occur not only because of defaults on mortgages, which politicians love to attribute to the greed of “bankers and Wall Street,” but also because of defaults on property tax payments. When given the opportunity, government will serve its best interest and not the best interest of its citizens.

While it is true that lower property taxes impact local government, I am consistently amazed at the targets of proposed budget cuts. Look back through the newspaper archives, and you will see quite a few articles where police and fire protection are targeted when budget decreases are necessary. One would think that all local governments spend tax money on is police and fire protection, because it seems as if little is said about other areas of spending that could be reduced. In effect, citizens are told that if we experience a lack of protection, it is our own fault since we are always balking at paying higher taxes.

In truth, I know that we need responsible government, that government needs revenue to operate and that a government source of revenue is derived from taxation. I am neither “anti-government” nor “anti-tax.” What I do oppose, however, is the runaway tendency of government and its taxation policies. Almost all of our governments — local, state and federal — engage in expensive policies that outright violate their respective constitutions. The protection of citizens provided by police and fire agencies is not one of those constitutional violations. The reality is that we are taxed enough already. Let our elected representatives in government use what they already take from us wisely and constitutionally before allowing them to spend and then take even more.
