Dick Hettinger, long the voice of news in the city on WSAL, is the new voice of the city. He has been elected mayor by defeating Paul Crowe. Scott Kraud also has been elected to the council.

Ellen Helms has been elected clerk-treasurer, and she’s the first Republican to hold the job since Charlie Knepper. Republicans will have to choose a county treasurer to replace her.

Chicago Bears Hall of Fame running back Walter “Sweetness” Payton has died of a rare liver disease.

IBP is planning to expand its Logansport facility.

Vicky Ropp is taking advantage of a beautiful fall day to take a walk.

Purdue raced to a 24-0 lead in the first half, then held on for a 31-29 victory over the Michigan Wolverines. The win means Purdue has defeated Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame in the same season for the first time in years. At 6-3, the Boilers are still in the hunt for the Rose Bowl.

Kelly Harris and Tim Rich are engaged, and so are Dawn Bullard and Mark Guckien.

Unemployment is at 6 percent.

Fleet Supply will be selling Cabbage Patch dolls this weekend as a benefit.

Actor Robbie Benson is stable after heart surgery.

Band leader Xavier Cougat has testified before a congressional committee that he was coached so that he could win $16,000 on a game show. One of the central winners on the show, Charles Van Doren, has testified the show was rigged for him to win.

Logansport fell to No. 6 in this week’s rankings, but took out some frustration by defeating Lafayette Jeff.

Democrat Otto Neumann has defeated Republican John Cotner and former mayor George Muehlhausen who ran as an independent. Democrats also claimed the clerk-treasurer’s race and one council seat, but the GOP claimed all six of the other council seats.

“Diary of Anne Frank” is playing at the ISIS in Winamac.

Jefferson Elementary School has won the grade school football title.

Olivia DeHavilland is starring in “Libel” at the Logan.

Ralph Todd is heading the Three Rivers Council of Boy Scouts.
