Golfer Payne Stewart has died in a plane crash. Stewart was not only one of the top golfers on the tour, but one of the most dapper ever to play the game. He wore NFL team colors as part of classic golfwear that included hats and argyle socks.

“Douible Jeopardy” is playing at the Eastwood in Peru.

Central dispatching has become an issue in the city of Logansport.

Actor Jon-Erik Hexum has died.

A week after upsetting 3A No. 1 South Bend St. Joseph, the Berries fell just short in pulling a second major upset against perennial power Fort Wayne Snider, 20-14.

“Places in the Heart” is playing at the UA at Cass Plaza.

Purdue had little trouble with Northwestern, dominating the Cats, 49-7. Notre Dame outlasted a feisty Bayou Bengal squad from LSU, 30-27.

Logansport High School’s mascot, Felix, is headed to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Reports say Princess Grace dated several Hollywood stars before marrying Prince Rainier. Among them were Clark Gable and Ray Milland.



50 Years Ago

Northwestern fended off Notre Dame, 30-24, to remain No. 2 in this week’s college football poll.

A rain-soaked, swampy Kokomo field was the Waterloo for the longest football winning streak in Logansport High School history. The Berries can still win the conference with victories in the next two weeks.

Purdue has upended Iowa, 14-7.

Graffis Shoes are at 306 Fourth St.

Pat Smith, Lynette Farrell and Dave Lowe are among the students at Tipton Elementary School.

There are still signs of an old stagecoach road house north of Metea on a farm owned by C.C. Rhodes. Known as “Nine-Mile House,” it had 18 rooms and operated until 1889.

Hiatt’s is taking orders for Christmas cards.

In Rochester, authorities rescued an 18-year-old Butler University freshman from Plainfield who was dropped off on an island in Lake Manitou as part of  his Phi Delta Theta induction. He had built a small fire on the island to keep warm.

The Pharos-Tribune has published a map of all counties in the Central and Eastern time zones. All of the Logansport area is in the Central Time zone.

John I. Shafer, 84, a local hardwood lumberman who has attended virtually all the national association conventions, has been named an honorary Mohawk chief.

Thomas and Carl Weiand, who operate a chili restaurant in Logansport, are opening another restaurant in Fort Wayne.

Efforts to drill for oil in Boone Township have been abandoned.

Galveston residents have met and decided to spend $25,000 for a new school.

Chickens are protected in the Lake Cicott Reserve.

Bert Clary is opening a new grocery at 316 Plum St.

The turkey crop is expected to be good this year.
