Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning spent the only Monday night off he’ll have this season at the Logansport Berry Bowl. As a fundraiser for the Northern Indiana Community Foundation, Manning spoke to college students from Cass, Fulton, Miami, Pulaski and Starke counties, urging them to stay in school and get a degree. A crowd of 3,000 was assembled in a football-theme night that included a tailgate party in the parking lot.

It may take up to 10 years, but local and state officials have begun a plan to widen U.S. 24 from Cass Plaza east to the city limits.

Winamac’s volleyball team downed Logansport despite outstanding play from Tami Greiner and Hayley Jones.

The Chicago Cubs opened the National League Championship Series with a robust 13-0 win over the San Diego Padres and followed it with another win in Chicago, but dropped three straight to the Padres in San Diego, sending San Diego to its first World Series.

Gov. Robert Orr was recently at the Vogue theater in Broad Ripple where he saw a music video with Henry Lee Summer.

Purdue quarterback Jim Everett has led the Boilers to an improbable upset of the Ohio State Buckeyes, 28-23.

Logansport has defeated Muncie Central 21-6.

In a heartstopping overtime game, Winamac downed North White, 22-21.

Gina Linback, Julie Sutton and Karen Hemberger are among Junior Miss candidates from Cass County, but Chris Hamilton from Pioneer is the winner.

50 Years Ago

The Chicago White Sox have been defeated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, but the Sox stretched it to six games.

Purdue has defeated Notre Dame, 28-7, for its fourth win in six years against the Irish, but the win was costly. Quarterback Ross Fichtner is out for the season. Bernie Allen, Purdue’s kicker, will finish the season behind center. Purdue is ranked No. 8 this week.

In high school football, Logansport remains No. 3 in the state. Indianapolis North Central, which has only been a high school for four years, has cracked the top 10. Logansport is one of five remaining unbeatens.

Rochester has defeated Warsaw, 20-6.

Logansport’s Homecoming queen candidates include Joann Pasquale, Sandy Sundy, Tamera Watts, Carolyn Lowe, Karen Smith, Janet Hanlin, Jeanne George and Francis Huff.

Dorothy Dandridge is starring in “Tamawgo” at the State.

Logansport’s new 16,500-kilowatt turbine is in place, and engineers from General Electric will be inspecting it for the next 18 months.
