Thorns & Roses, Oct. 2

Roses

• To those who helped to make Freedom Hunt ’09 a success for the group of special needs children who had the opportunity to attend. Begun in 2006, Freedom Hunt gives those children the opportunity to hunt, fish, camp and experience the outdoors. The youth, some of whom are paralyzed, cancer survivors or accident victims, come from around the state to Cass County for the hunt.

• To Maurices for the support it gave to the Cass County Humane Society through “Rescues and Runways,” a dinner and fashion show at McHale Complex in Riverside Park. Joined by nine rescued dogs, about 20 models sported fall fashions from the Logansport Mall retailer at an event designed to raise money for the society’s new animal shelter. It’s a great cause, and we applaud those who made the event possible.

• To organizers and supporters of efforts to turn 270 miles of Michigan Road through Indiana into a historic byway. Kurt West Garner and Jim Grey are leading the effort to apply for the designation by the summer of 2010. Michigan Road, which begins in Madison and works its way north to Michigan City, was one of the first commissioned by the Indiana Legislature and played an important role in opening the state to settlement. The road runs through Carroll, Cass and Fulton counties in the area. After building support in the northern half of the state, organizers will now turn their sights on southern Indiana.

• To the re-enactors, demonstrators and living history educators who took the time to join in the fifth annual Chief Logan’s Port of Living History Festival. The festival gives visitors the chance to experience life in the early 1800s through the work of weavers, woodcarvers, Indians and military re-enactors.
