Where streets got their names
Richard Copeland - HISTORY BUFF
Pollard Street is located below the hill from Dykeman Golf Course.
It was named to honor Philip and Elizabeth Pollard who owned the land right above the hill. Philip Pollard was first a wealthy businessman in Carroll County at Tiptonsport (no longer existing) on Rock Creek six miles north of Delphi. He moved to Logansport and formed a partnership with Thomas Wilson and operated a warehouse at Fifth and Market streets. Later he owned the Hoosier Bank across Fourth Street from the old courthouse. Philip Pollard was know as Col. Pollard, as he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel by Gov. Noah Noble on May 24, 1832, with instructions to organize the 77th Regiment of Indiana Militia at Delphi on June 23, 1832.
Several streets were named for presidents of the United States.
Grant Street off North Third, Taft Street north of Fairview School, Van Buren Street off South Cicott Street, Washington Street on the west side, McKinley Street on the south side, Monroe Street north east of Mount Hope, Cleveland Street on the northwest side, Jackson Street east of Mount Hope, Madison on the west side and Garfield west of Fairview.
Several streets were named for famous people such as: Fulton Street east of Mount Hope, Franklin east of Mount Hope, Dewey on the south side, Hawthorne in Rolling Ridge, Webster on the north side and Clark off Third Street.
Spring Street off North Third Street was named for the springs that used to flow from the hillside.
Treen Street is between Mount Hope Cemetery and Michigan Avenue. The street was named for John Van Treen who bought several lots in Jobtown (Fulton Street area) and sold them to Samuel A. Custer.
John Treen platted the Treen Addition and named one of the streets for himself. His daughter, Florence Van Treen Davidson, sold lots in 1874 in the Treen Addition. Another daughter, Philomena, married Moses McElheny, who also platted an addition to the city.
Ewing Street is south of the Ninth Street Cemetery. It was named for the Ewing family who arrived in Logansport in 1834. John Ewing was a tailor at 508 E. Broadway. He owned property on Ninth Street between the Wabash and Erie Canal and the Toledo, Wabash Valley and Great Western Railroad Depot. He married Jane Kinnear of Ireland. They had three children: Alexander, David and James.
Frank Street is north of Fairview School. Frank Street was named for three brothers, Harry, Martin and Herman Frank. The Frank brothers operated a clothing store and a junkyard. They belonged to the Masons and Logan Tribe of Red Men. The brothers were born in Bavaria, Germany.
Hanna Street is on the north side of the Eel River. It was named for James Warren Hanna and Samuel Hanna. They operated a sawmill six miles southeast of Logansport. They sold part of their addition to James Henry on the south side of Pleasant Hill.
