Foundation supports numerous projects

Congratulations to all of the organizations that will share in the $68,000 in community grants announced this week by the Cass County Community Foundation.

The total this year was $7,000 higher than a year ago.

The Logansport Children’s Choir accepted $10,000 to help cover the cost of sending about 50 students to Austria for the Salzburg Choral Festival in July 2009. The group also will tour Switzerland, Germany and the Czech Republic.

Logan’s Landing got nearly $16,000 for expanding the Cass/Pulaski Community Corrections greenhouse, which provides flowers for downtown Logansport and the parks.

Special Olympics of Cass County got just under $7,000 to replace equipment and uniforms for its 300 athletes for the first time in more than 10 years.

The Galveston Youth League collected a $10,000 grant to improve the park where 240 boys and girls played baseball and softball this year.

The Cass County Family Y got $9,000 to install outside playground equipment, and Food Finders Food Bank got $2,000 to defray the cost of food delivery to Cass County. Friends of the Walton Library got $10,000 to develop an urban park in Walton, and the Logansport Kiwanis Club got just under $2,000 for a program called “Book Readers and Horn Blowers” to teach the value of music and reading

Literacy Volunteers of Cass County got $2,400 to replace a 10-year-old computer system.

Over the years, the grants have funded a jazz festival, a library computer system and skits for high school students on the dangers of abusive relationships. All together, the foundation has awarded more than $1.6 million in community grants over the past 11 years. The grants are made possible through gifts to the foundation’s unrestricted endowments.
