Hakeem Olajuwon has been taken first in the NBA draft. He’ll stay in Houston and play alongside Ralph Sampson for the Houston Rockets. The Portland Trailblazers picked second, choosing Kentucky’s Sam Bowie. The No. 3 pick was North Carolina’s Michael Jordan. He was chosen by the Chicago Bulls, who decided to pick him when they were unable to swing a deal for a legitimate starting center.

Betty Rendel of Miami County is telling Indiana Republicans they have to guard against complacency.

Florence Earp, the Union Township trustee in Fulton County, has been fined $1,000 by Marshall Superior Court Judge R. Alexis Clarke because she failed to provide Winamac attorney Daniel Murphy with a copy of a study on the Kewanna school. She also will pay Murphy’s fees.

St. Louis Cardinals Manager Whitey Herzog is shaking his head after Chicago Cub second baseman Ryne Sandberg slugged two home runs in a 12-11 win on national television. “He’s the best I’ve ever seen and that’s it,” Herzog said. Sandberg homered off former Cub Bruce Sutter in the ninth inning to tie the game and tied it a second time in the 11th before the Cubs pushed across the winning run. Sandberg had five hits on the day.

Bill Pfister, 36, a Huntington native who has been the principal at Lawrenceburg High School, is the new Logansport High School principal.

A new Logansport Community School Corporation will be created effective Aug. 1, and that move reflects the consolidation of Logansport with Eel and Clay Township schools. Students from both townships have been attending Logansport schools for some time on a transfer basis.
