Food drive set for Saturday

The 16th annual letter carrier food drive is Saturday.

In 2007, the drive collected 70,745,176 pounds of food for the needy from postal customers nationwide, which brought the total for the first 15 years to 836.2 million pounds. Locally, we collected 13,000 pounds in 2007, which was divided between the Salvation Army and Emmaus food pantries.

In past years, our local food drive included only the Logansport delivery area (those residents with a Logansport address), but this year we are pleased to announce that our local food drive will include Logansport, Camden, Star City, Twelve Mile, Royal Center, Lucerne and Lake Cicott. So we are excited about this year’s expected harvest.

So how does it work? The success is in its simplicity. Any resident of these delivery areas simply places their non-perishable food donations next to their mailboxes before their letter carrier delivers mail on Saturday. The carrier will do the rest.

For individuals who receive mail in a post office box, simply drop off your donation when you pick up your mail on Saturday or sooner if need be. Carriers, postmasters, supervisors, clerks and volunteers will sort and divide, then deliver the food donations to our local food pantries.

So we thank everyone in our communities who will take part in this food drive in advance.

Thank you for your donation on Saturday.

Dave Morris
