• To the local organizations that joined to help the Salvation Army raise the matching funds it needed to apply for $18,000 in funding to help individuals and families affected by the current recession. Maj. Rose Eagle said the organization had received letters of intent from the Logansport Economic Development Foundation, United Way, the Cass County Community Foundation, Federal Mogul, Cass County Extension Homemakers and a Cass County trust fund while checks had come in from a local church and a private citizen. She could not confirm the total but said it was well more than the $9,000 goal. United Way and the community foundation had each pledged $4,500, and LEDF had pledged $2,500.

• To the Miami Correctional Facility for its help in getting ready for this week’s threat of flooding. The Miami County Emergency Management Agency called the prison on Monday asking for help in filling sandbags for use in heading off flooding in the northern portion of the county around the Eel River. Some 20 offenders filled 1,800 bags. The task took more than two hours to complete. “Miami Correctional Facility continues to strive to be a good neighbor and will help the community whenever possible,” superintendent Mark Sevier said in a news release. In 2008, the news release said, the prison donated more than 24,000 hours in offender labor for various tasks.
