Thorns & Roses

Friday, Feb. 15, 2008

Thorns & Roses is a weekly feature highlighting the best and worst of the week.

Roses

• To David Forgey, who was selected by the Cass County Community Foundation as the person with the Biggest Heart in Cass County. Forgey was nominated by Betty McKaig and family. After a fire destroyed the McKaig family’s milkhouse and dairy facilities, Forgey and his business partner, Scott Foerg, immediately offered the use of their facilities near Georgetown. The men put their own expansion plans on hold to help a fellow dairyman in his time of need.

• To the volunteers who joined to deliver singing valentines for the community foundation on Thursday. The effort was part of the foundation’s month-long “Give Your Heart to Cass County” fundraiser, and it raised the spirits of folks throughout the county.

• To Amanda Overmyer, who made her hometown of Camden proud with her success on “American Idol.” Overmyer is a 2001 graduate of Delphi High School. We wish her great success.

• To Kelsey Lesher, who organized a fundraiser to be held at Pioneer Junior-Senior High School tonight in memory of her stepbrother, Kacy Jones. Jones died last year of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The fundraiser will benefit the Childhood Leukemia Foundation of Indiana.

• To Fisher Funeral Chapel for its seventh annual Valentines for Vets campaign. The campaign distributes valentines to local veterans in nursing homes as well as residents at the Indiana Veterans Home. Valentines also go to local service men and women overseas. The project is part of the national Salute to Hospitalized Vets week, which delivers more than 1 million valentines annually. It’s a great program.
