Patty Diane Lewellen
Patty Diane Lewellen, 50, Texas, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at home, holding the hand of her loving husband.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer one and a half years ago, Patty remained positive and continued to live life. She never gave up, even after countless chemotherapy and radiation treatments were determined to take her strength and spirit. Even when she was exhausted, she would walk or run when she could, determined not to lose her strength. She worked nightly, continuing to make quilts, hats, and scarves for her children and grandchildren. She continued to go to work, go to church, care for her husband, and tend to her new dog — all things that she adored doing in life.
Patty was born on Feb. 3, 1963, to Edgar and Phyllis Henry. She grew up and went to school in El Cajon, Calif., and later went to college at the University of San Diego. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Paul Lewellen, while he was stationed there in the Navy. They were married on Feb. 2, 1985. Patty then moved herself to Indiana to make a family with Paul, and the three children that she would also call her own. In 1996, they moved to Texas, where they have lived for 17 years.
It was in Texas that she found the job she loved. She worked in the same law office of Glast, Phillips and Murray, for the entire 17 years she was in Texas. Here, she made lasting friendships with many, including her boss, Ken Horwitz, who would come to love her as his own.
Patty was a quiet and reserved person and mostly enjoyed being surrounded by close friends and family. Though she didn’t require much attention from others, the relationships she formed were meaningful, purposeful and well maintained, allowing her to achieve things that most people never do. She loved God, she loved her family and she loved her church.
Before she became ill, Patty was very active, and enjoyed challenging herself, by running in multiple races. She loved working in her yard, and playing with her animals. Wine tasting made her happy, especially if she could enjoy a glass here or there with a friend or family member. Reading was one of her favorite pastimes, and she has been known to continue reading, even while maintaining a conversation. She loved quilting, embroidery, knitting and crocheting things — She always kept her family warm. She enjoyed cooking with her grandkids, and enjoyed writing them letters when she was sick. She loved life!
Patty is survived by her husband, Paul Lewellen; her three children and their companions, Tia Lewellen and Renee Leach, Matthew and Jenny Lewellen, Nathan and Penny Lewellen; her 10 grandchildren, Cody, Brendan, Toby, Kaleb, Hannah, Harley, Caleb, Keaton, Chloe and Emma; and her sister, Pam McCaskey. Also surviving are two children who have grown to call her mom during their young impressionable lives, Michael Richie and Kathleen Wong. Lastly, her surviving animals, who we would never forget to mention, her three cats, Nikki, Chloe and Teddy, and one dog, Kota.
Patty’s life will be celebrated during a small memorial service beginning at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Pisgah Christian Church, 503 N. 600 West, Logansport.
