Billy Richard Nickell


---- — Billy Richard Nickell, 86, Logansport, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, in his home.

Born April 19, 1927, in Fulton County, he was the son of the late James and Minnie Ward Nickell.

At the age of 17, Billy quit school and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. From 1944-47, he served three years in China and Japan during WWII and the Occupation period.

After returning home from the service. he married Irene Laughman Nickell in Jeffersonville. The couple celebrated over 66 years of marriage on June 2. She survives in Logansport.

In 1967, 20 years after his service to our country, Billy completed his high school degree and was a graduate of Caston High School.

For 40 years, Billy worked on the railroad. He enjoyed attending railroad breakfasts and feeding the birds and the cats. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting and golf. A wise quote reads, “When an old man dies, a library burns.” That was certainly true of Billy. He was a wealth of knowledge and a wonderful storyteller.

Bill was a member of Life Member American Legion Post 60 and the United Transportation Union.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ward Nickell and Harvey Nickell, and one sister, Helen Kelly.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Fisher Funeral Chapel. Due to the weather, military rites will be conducted at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Ever Rest Memorial Park, Logansport.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service in the funeral chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cass County Humane Society.
