Helen Dorothy Johnson, 101, Logansport, passed away at 8:12 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at Miller’s Merry Manor.
Born May 19, 1912, outside of Clymers in a country home, she was the daughter of Jesse and Carrie Mae Bolt Owens.
She graduated from Logansport High School in 1929 and attended Logansport Business College on College Hill.
Helen met her future husband, Robert Johnson, on a blind date with a sister and her boyfriend from Young America. They were married in Russiaville on Oct. 23, 1931. They lived in Logansport before moving to Burrows, where they lived for 64 years.
Helen worked as a bookkeeper at S. S. Kresge for 17 years before the birth of their only child, Vicki Sue Lassiter. She resides in Logansport with her husband, Rodney.
Helen’s pride and joy was her yard and gardening. She canned vegetables and fruits every year until she was physically unable to do so.
She was a member of the Burrows Home Economics Club, Royal Center Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and Clymers United Church Ladies group. She belonged to Clymers United Methodist Church since childhood. She also enjoyed playing euchre at the Logansport Shrine Club.
She and her husband of 71 years moved to Logansport in 2000. Robert passed away in 2002 at the age of 93.
Helen lived at Miller’s Merry Manor for the last seven years, where she received excellent care from her Miller’s “family.”
Surviving, in addition to her daughter and son-in-law, are a brother, Donald (Marilyn) Owens, Valparaiso, grandchildren, Carrie (Scott) Weaver, Douglas (Jenny) Snider, Holly Knight (Dottie Hill), stepgrandchildren, Carie Reagan, Deana (Jeff) Daugherty and Charles (Mary) Lassiter.
Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and four sisters, Opal, Mary, Jean and Ruth.
The funeral will be at noon Saturday at Kroeger Funeral Home with the Rev. Clark Miller officiating. Due to inclement weather, interment will be private for family only in St. John’s Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday prior to the funeral.
