ROYAL CENTER — J. Harold “Grandpa” Sterling, 80, Royal Center, passed away at 8:47 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at St. Elizabeth East Hospital, Lafayette.
Born on Aug. 12, 1933, in Judsonia, Ark., he was the son of the late William and Mary (Cox) Sterling. On Jan. 2, 1953, he married Ruth Oswalt; she survives.
Harold formerly worked at Nelson Screw in Logansport for several years. He was a brakeman on the Pennsylvania Railroad for 15 years, was formerly employed at Wilson Foods in Logansport until its closure and retired from Pioneer Elementary School as a janitor.
Harold attended Crooked Creek Christian Church and he enjoyed gardening, watching sports and most of all spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Sterling of Royal Center; daughter, Sandra Franscoviak (Marvin) of Logansport; son, Steven Sterling (Rebecca) of Royal Center; brother, Steve Sterling of Searcy, Ark.; sisters, Alda Hastings and Kaunita Ellison both of Judsonia, Ark.; and grandchildren, Ryan Franscoviak (Laura), Aubrey Franscoviak, Kristen Franscoviak, Janet Franscoviak, Matthew Franscoviak, Thillia Reynolds (Kevin) and Chris Pier (Dannielle). He is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by brothers Eugene Sterling, Everett Sterling and Clarence Sterling, and sisters Mary Landis, Clara Watkins, Pauline Watkins, Evelyn Roberts, Louise Cranford and Alpha Sterling.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Harrison-Metzger-Rans Funeral Homes, Royal Center Chapel, with Pastor Scott Ellison officiating. Burial will be at Kistler Cemetery in Royal Center.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
