Barbara S. Bevelhimer

Barbara S. Bevelhimer, 84, Logansport, passed away at 2:41 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at Heritage Pointe in Warren.

Born July 30, 1929, in Anderson, she was the daughter of the late Hobert M. and Luva (Chamness) Heiney.

Barbara was a 1947 graduate of Anderson High School and a 1951 graduate of Butler University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She later earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin.

Barbara was a teacher in the Logansport School Corporation. An advocate for adult literacy, she was named the first Director of the Adult Education Program at El-Tip-Wa in 1972. Her programs were instrumental to local residents, leading them in their pursuit of adult literacy and learning English as a second language. As a result of her efforts, Barbara received the Evelyn Davis Literacy Award and was named the Indiana Adult Educator of the year in 1988. Barbara was a member of the Literacy Volunteers of America and Delta Kappa Gamma. She retired in 1991.

A member of the First United Methodist Church, Barbara shared her faith in many ways. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and for many years helped to organize Easter sunrise services at the McHale Performing Arts Center. Barbara was a counselor at several United Methodist camps, including Camp Re-Yo-Ad at Epworth Forest, Pine Creek and several Canoe Adventure Trips on the Eel River. She had served on mission trips to the Red Bird Mission in Kentucky, and was active in the United Methodist Women and Church Women United. During her retirement, Barbara served as the director of the Elder Hostel program at Epworth Forest.

With a spirit of adventure, Barbara canoed the Boundary Waters of Lake Superior, spent the 1992 summer as a seasonal employee at the Glacier National Park, and traveled throughout Korea. She had served on the Cass County Parks Department Board of Directors, was a member of the Logansport Art Association, and had served as a Girl Scout leader. Barbara enjoyed painting and calligraphy. She loved the Dentzel Carousel at Riverside Park, France Park and Pokagon State Park. Barbara took great pride in sharing this love with each of her grandchildren.
