James C. Heimlich

LOGANSPORT — James C. Heimlich, 85, Logansport, passed away at 9:53 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at St. Vincent’s Heart Center, Indianapolis.

Born April 8, 1928, in Logansport, he was the son of Edwin and Mabel Deniston Heimlich.

He was married Dec. 26, 1950, at St. James Lutheran Church to Doranne Kraut, who survives.

Mr. Heimlich retired in 1988 as senior vice president at National City Bank.

A lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church, he served on the finance board, as church elder and treasurer for 17 years.

A veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jim was also a member of the American Legion Post 60 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3790.

Prominent in community affairs, Jim was a member of the former Breakfast Exchange Club, Salvation Army board of directors, Indiana Sheriff’s Association, United Commercial Travelers of America, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and was a charter member of the first Logansport Optimist Club. In his leisure he enjoyed golfing, fishing, yard work and especially diving board stunts with his grandchildren.

Jim was an honest and respected man with a dry wit and mischievous sense of humor. The solid presence of his character and wisdom will be sorely missed by his daughters. He taught them to confidently step up and successfully take on the challenges offered by a complicated world... and to keep a clean car.

Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters, Denise Heimlich of Columbia, S.C. and Janelle (Don) Hunt of Shelbyville; brother, William A. (Lynette) Heimlich of Waukesha, Wisc.; and grandchildren, Jessika Ponsler and Chad Ponsler.

Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Billie Jo, Bonnie, Bobbie, Beckie, Brad and Kurt.

One brother, Richard E. Heimlich, preceded him in death.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kroeger Funeral Home with Pastor K. C. Dehning officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jim’s memory to the St. James Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 430 9th St., Logansport, IN 46947.

Condolences and personal remembrances may be left online at www.kroegerfuneralhome.com.
