Sarah Leigh Wynne Tolbert

Sarah Leigh Wynne Tolbert, wife of Frank Edward Tolbert, Logansport, died on Jan. 10, 2013.

Mrs. Tolbert, daughter of the late Dr. Roland Edward Wynne and May Wallace Brooks Wynne, was born on Oct. 8, 1931, and reared in Bedford, graduated from Bedford High School in 1949, and graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle in 1953.

She and her husband were married on Sept. 6, 1953, in Bedford. They moved to Logansport in May 1955 after Mr. Tolbert graduated from Indiana University School of Law.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Tolbert is survived by their daughter, Sarah (Sally) Leigh Tolbert Muehlhausen and her husband James, their daughter Jennifer (Jenny) Leigh Muehlhausen Carlos, M.D, (William Graham), great-granddaughter, Katherine (Katie) Leigh Carlos, and by their son, Brooks Wynne Tolbert, Bloomington, and his son Nicholas M.F. Tolbert.

In addition to her family, Mrs. Tolbert was an active volunteer. She was an active member of Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc., for over 55 years. Her activities in this organization included, on the local level, corresponding secretary and president for two terms, and at the state level, Province officer (1967-1969), state constitution committee (1969-1971), Parliamentarian (1971-1975), Historian (1975-1979), Treasurer (1977-1979), Vice President (1979-1981), President (1981-1983), Advisor (1983-1987).

Other activities in the community included: Daniel Webster Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization (Vice President and President)(she wrote the bylaws that enabled the group to become independent from the national PTA); Den Mother for Cub Scouts for three years; set up the first rubella vaccination clinic for all Logansport school children; set up the first visual screening program for the Logansport school system; and organized the first volunteer teachers aid group. She also helped with fundraising for the Cass County Children’s Home and the Logansport Performing Arts Council.

A member of Trinity Episcopal Church for over 23 years, she served as president of the Episcopal Church Women for five terms and Altar Guild Treasurer for 13 years.

Mrs. Tolbert was also a member of the American Association of University Women; the League of Women Voters; Daughters of the American Revolution (the Bedford chapter was named for her ancestor John Wallace); the Logansport Art Association; and the Logansport Pan-Hellenic Group.

As a member of the Board of Governors of Riley’s Children Hospital in Indianapolis, she served on Grants-in-Aid, Child & Family Support, Nominating, and Executive committees. She also held the office of First Vice President. In 2010 she retired from the Board after 21 years of service.

Preceding her in death were her brothers and sisters, Judith, Thomas, Brooks, and Patricia. Survivors, other than immediate family, include one niece, Judith Wynne and two nephews, William Wynne (Crawfordsville), and Charles Boswell (Cary), Indianapolis, plus two great-nieces, Pamela and Kristen, one great-nephew, Thomas Boswell (Sarah), four great-great-nieces, Lauriel, Claire, Grace, and Elizabeth and three great-great-nephews, Cody, Patrick, and Colton, and one great-great-great-nephew, Malcolm.

Private services will be held at a later date at Trinity Episcopal Church, Logansport.

Burial will be in the Columbarium at Trinity Episcopal Church.
