Joyce Darlene Reed


KOKOMO — Joyce Darlene (Smith) Reed, 69, Kokomo, died peacefully Friday, April 19, 2013, at home surrounded by her family and best friend after a long battle with cancer.

She was born May 17, 1943, to Virgil and Mildred (Johnson) Smith, who preceded her in death.

Joyce graduated from Eastern High School in 1961. On June 7, 1964, she married Jim, the love of her life, and treasured their 48 years of marriage. She graduated from Purdue University in 1965 with a B.A. in Elementary Education and with a master’s degree in 1966 in special education. She taught second grade in Benton Co. Schools before she retired to start a family. She also did private tutoring with students for several years.

Joyce was a longtime member of Fairfield Christian Church where she was the piano and keyboard player for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Reed; daughters, Kathy (Mike) Broyles of Dayton, Ohio and Lisa Reed of Franklin, Tenn.; grandchildren, Kelsey Hall, Drew Hall and Sage Broyles; and brother, Jerry Smith.

She loved her cherished husband, her family and churches, as well as many friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, Kokomo. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Fairfield Christian Church Memorial Scholarship Fund.
