Charles W. Gill

Charles W. Gill, 86, Logansport, went to heaven to be with Margie, his wife and life companion of almost 55 years, at 1:16 a.m., Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, in Clarian Arnett Hospital, Lafayette.

He was born June 6, 1923, in Indianapolis, the son of Clarence A. and Thelma A. (Fritts) Gill.

He was married May 29, 1948, at St. Joseph’s Church in Logansport, to Mary M. “Margie” Hombach, who preceded him in death on April 11, 2003.

Mr. Gill retired in 1987 after 29 years of employment as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Prior to that he had worked at Pat Moran’s Excel Auto Parts in downtown Logansport.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Gill served in Gen. Patton’s Third Army, 255th Field Artillery Battalion, 12 Corps, Battery A. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and received Bronze Stars for serving in the battles of the Rhineland, Bulge and Central Europe.

Mr. Gill graduated from Logansport High School in 1942. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, St. Francis of Assisi Council 561, Logansport.

Among his hobbies, he enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are a son, Bob (Becky) Gill, Iola, KS; daughters: Annette Appel, Chesterton, and Carolyn (David) McDonald, Frankfort; grandchildren: Lindsay Appel, Damien Appel, Rhianna Appel, Nicholas (Jacki) Gill and Nathan Gill; nieces, Barb Winegardner and Terri Woodworth; nephew: Mike Bender; and sister-in-law: Bernadine (Vince) Bender, Logansport.

Preceding in death were brothers Lawrence Gill and Raymond Gill, sister Patricia Downhour and nephew James Gill.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at All Saints Catholic Church, with Father Michael McKinney officiating.

Calling will be 2 to 6 p.m. today at Kroeger Funeral Home, where a Scripture service will be held at 4 p.m. with Deacon Juan Rodriguez officiating.

Interment with full military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, and envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
