James “Jim” Lee Metz, 72, Logansport, passed away at 1:30 a.m.Wednesday, July 31, 2013, in his residence.

Born Sept. 1, 1940, he was the son of the late Robert and Phyllis (Wright) Metz. On May 26, 1962, in Grand Forks, N.D., he married Gloria M. Schulz, who survives.

Jim was an engineering technician at Grissom AFB..

He was a United States Air Force veteran. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and enjoyed fishing. Jim was honored to have one of the little league fields in Logansport dedicated as “Metz Field,” as he spent countless hours volunteering his time. He was a former Sunday School superintendent and served on several boards. Spending time with family was very important to Jim.

Surviving along with his wife, are three sons, James R. (Tay Hester) Metz, Logansport, Thomas L. (Debbie) Metz, Delphi, and Michael W. (Megan) Metz, Brooklyn, Mich.; three grandsons, Matthew T. (Emily) Metz, Rainbow City, Ala., Steven L. Metz, Lafayette, and Ryan J. Metz, Brooklyn, Mich.; great-grandson, Mason E. Metz, Rainbow City, Ala.; two sisters, Dianna (Floyd) Pennington, McDonough, Ga.; and Carolyn (John) Pennington, Greenwood.

Jim was preceded in death by one brother, Max Metz.

A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Logansport, with Pastor Marvin Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Michigan Cemetery, Michigan, N.D.

Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday in Gundrum Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church on Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church or Metz Field in Logansport.
